Product Description

Anthony Sampson

A remarkable memoir, which reads like a racy comic thriller but conveys all the more poignantly the suffering behind the laughter.

Doris Lessing

One of the livliest books about the pre-Mandela era - a very enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who Killed Mr Drum?, 8 April 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Who Killed Mr. Drum? (Paperback)
'Who Killed Mr Drum?' is a monument to the talented, creative hard-hitting, hard-living, hard-drinking journalists who, in the late fifties, worked for the legendary South African magazine 'Drum'. These were brave young men who risked everything to make 'Drum' the clear voice of urban Africans and to enable it to become Africa's leading magazine. They stood against the injustices imposed on millions of black Africans by a brutally oppressive regime and theirs was also a constant struggle to assert their personal human rights and dignity. Sylvester Stein, who knew them all as friends and colleagues, poses the question: why did so many of them die young? In answering this question his book raises other deep, eternal and disturbing questions. Sylvester Stein's writing is relaxed and varied and fun! The book breathes a haunting elegiac quality throughout but it also wonderfully evokes the irrepressible spirit and the wild humour that were necessary to those desperate times. this book needs to be read by all who would understand the Apartheid years in South Africa.

3.0 out of 5 stars The question remains...., 1 Dec 2009
By Alan Venable "Author/creator of 'Dr. Peanut'... - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Who Killed Mr. Drum? (Paperback)
I'm an American who acquired this book to learn more about Drum magazine and its coterie of writers in the 1950s and 1960s, especially Nat Nakasa. It was somewhat useful to me in that respect. The title suggests that it comes up with new insights into the death of the legendary journalist Henry Nxumalo, but as far as I'm aware it doesn't.
