Beverley Knight's third album, Who I Am shows how far the "girl from Wolverhampton" has come from her admittedly brilliant debut, B Funk. Knight, whose bright up-tempo R&B songs have crossed age and genre barriers, is clearly making the most of being Britain's most popular soul singer since Sade. Knight has surrounded herself with some impressive producers and guests such as Musiq Soulchild flexing his Stevie Wonderish voice on the lovely ballad "Beautiful Contradiction". Produced by James Poyser and Che Guevara, who between them have worked with Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo and Jill Scott, Beverley revels in impressing us with her gospel-great voice and her tight songwriting. The reggae-tinged "Get Up" and the funky "Shoulda Woulda Coulda" showcase Beverley's command of the dance floor and bear witness to her stunning range (vocally, emotionally and texturally). While her playful and sexy challenge of "The Shape of You" to the multifarious sounds of "Same (As I Ever Was)", along with the Prince-esque "Ambition (It All Comes 2 U)", demonstrate her undeniable hip-hop sensibility as well. Knight is obviously more comfortable with herself, as the push-me-pull-you tension of second album, Prodigal Sista, has given way to a much more upbeat direction. Who I Am quickly proves why Knight, unlike many of today's studio-enhanced artists, is the real deal.--Reuben Dessay

Well I new this one was extra-special when my Mum banged on my door asking me to turn it up!
here's a track by track review:

GET UP! - The production on this is so tight; a great start to the album! 9/10

SHOULDA WOULDA COULDA - Know this? - you should do - this is pop-soul at it's very best & her best single to date 10/10

SHAPE OF YOU - A pleasant ballad in the style of the above hit, love the verses 8/10

FALLEN SOLDIER - A classy song, great vocals 9/10

BEAUTIFUL CONTRADICTION - This duet is a bit on the bland side but nether the less a pleasant song 7/10

HURRICANE JANE - Good to see her using different styles like on this one which reminds me of Prince 8/10

SAME (AS I EVER WAS) - A dancey more up-tempo number I love the background sounds 9/10

WHATEVER'S CLEVER - Warning - if you play this song you will not be able to get it out of your head!, a funky hip hop ish dance number that is just brilliant! 10/10

AMBITION (ALL COMES TO YOU) - Another great ballad has a good chorus 8/10

BESTSELLER MYSTERY - And here we come to the pinnacle of the album - This has got to be a single - if so it will become the BK classic, Amazing vocals, great lyrics just an excellent song! 10/10

GOLD - Aah there's something about piano ballads isn't there?, probably her most personal song yet; it's minimalism really let's the emotion come through - yep another classic! 10/10

WHO I AM - How refreshing to hear an acapella song that isn't mind-numbingly dull! - I see this song as a kind of hint as to what comes next from her, great vocals once again! 9/10

I want to say that this album is much more accessible & better than her last one, & it proves the point that to achieve Quality it takes time, but this was definitely worth the wait & I would recommend this album to anyone!

Beverley has done it again! After a break of four years, she's 'made it back' again, and boy was it worth the wait! This album is the best I have heard in years. It makes you happy, makes you think, makes you cry, it makes you wonder why this British star doesnt get more praise for her devoted work. It includes the first single 'Get Up' and the amazing 'Shoulda Woulda Coulda', and I'm sure there are another four songs that could be released as singles. My favourites (apart from 'Shoulda Woulda Coulda') are 'Bestseller Mystery', a song that you could imagine being sung in a gospel choir and 'Gold', possibbly the best song ever written.
It is rare that this country produces a star as bright as Beverley. You simply must get this album, it is worth every penny. Dont be fooled into thinking that there are only 11 tracks on this disc, as there are two bonus tracks - 'Who I Am' a beautiful accapella tune, and a mellow remix of 'Shoulda Woulda Coulda'. What are you waiting for? Go buy it!

Finally I've found an album to match up to Alicia Keys!
This album is brilliant.
Sweet ballads such as Beautiful contradiction and shoulda woulda coulda were definatley written from the heart.
But don't worry there is also plenty of upbeat funky tunes such as Get Up!
I strongly reccomend you buy this album today!
Trust me you will not be dissapointed,it is not an album that will grow on you you will love it straight away.
What more can I say!

I have loved Beverley Knight ever since the days of the Prodigal Sista album, which is the second album of hers that I have always wished to add to my collection but I have never bought it yet.
Anyway, when she released the fantastic Get Up, I was ready to claw my paws onto, this amazing album.
It starts with the energetic Get Up! and yes, it makes you do what it says on the title! Then, the soothing Shoulda Woulda Coulda comes on, which has to be her best single yet, after Sista Sista. After that masterpiece comes the beautiful Shape Of You, which goes down similar lines as SWC, with Beverleys vocals being sweet and emotive. Fallen Soldier is heart rendering and reflective, Beautiful Contradiction, a duet to note with its strong string section, hooks along nicely and Hurricane Jane, a catchy, soulful song. Same (As I Ever Was)is upbeat and funky, and Whatevers Clever, one of my favourites is danceable, fresh and delightful. Ambition (It All Comes To You) is mellow like a bright spring day with soft and heart warming lyrics. Bestseller Mystery showcases Beverley at her best vocals, giving sexual attitude and passion. Gold is a maserpiece of its own and, as it is self penned by Beverley, a great acheivement. Its lyrics speak the importance of friendship and how we ought to value people. Then, you get Who I Am, a wonderful accapella and the Philly Mix of Shoulda Woulda Coulda gives the song a more "live" and soulful feel, which is indeed perfect for the closure of a CD. There is no doubting this woman's talent, she has worked har over the years to get to where she is now and she deserves all the success in the future. She is a shining star
