Directed by noted Swedish filmmaker Victor Sjostrom, it is the story of a scientific genius who is humiliated by his philandering wife and a major career set-back. To express his pain, bitterness and anger he becomes a circus clown who seems to enjoy the frequently cruel slapstick antics of his new colleagues. While in the circus, he finds a chance at renewal when he falls for a lovely bareback rider. But will he at last find happiness? Or will tragedy continue to be his closest companion?

"he who gets slapped" is a rather sad and moving story of a professor who after losing his job and wife to another man, earns a living as a circus clown whose act consists of being slapped as many times as possible, usually to the amusement of the paying public.
this is chaney's film all the way, it is he who commands the viewers attention throughout as the film builds to a rather dramatic and grisly climax as he plans and executes his revenge against the man who wrecked his life and career.

Format:DVD
This gets four stars simply because it's a work of genius both on the part of Chaney and Seastrom. The region 2 French edition is a poor but watchable print, in other words not restored. The titles are in French with no English subtitles but this hardly matters as the story speaks for itself in mime terms.
