4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent investment! 6 May 2012
Format:Paperback
Books of advice abound. I haven't actually written one myself yet. But I am delighted that Dr. Nicola Bunting has. "Who do you want to be?" is exactly the right question for the middle-aged (like me). But it's also something my undergraduate son needs to ask himself, or my retired sister-in-law. Bunting has practical answers, drawn from both her private and professional life. That gives her book a major edge in my eyes - too many of her rivals write at one remove, a bit like the Pope advising on family planning. But Dr. Bunting's really been there - and continues to go there with all different types of client. Her other major advantage is that she can actually write English. Unlike yer average Lifestyle Guru (or McKinsey suit), she's a distinguished scholar of the language - and it shows. Highly readable as a result! Simple in the best sense - i.e. clear, and for this category of book, remarkably jargon-free. So don't be put off by the kitschiger bits ("happy habits" - what was she thinking?). This book is seriously underpriced. It's a great investment. Especially if you actually follow its advice!

5.0 out of 5 stars rare thing - a practical page turner! 8 May 2012
By Kathryn
Format:Paperback
I found this book a real page turner - read it with pen in hand and found its approach both accessible and intelligent....Would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to assess their own goals and aspirations - both workwise and in the round. It stands out amongst "Self Help" books as remarkably low in jargon - high in usability, and a joy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expert view and own experience 25 April 2012
Format:Paperback
Very practical and inspiring - I think that the fact Nicola has herself successfully changed career and had a 'reinvention' (from academic expert in 19th century literature to executive coach) makes this book particularly convincing: she knows whereof she speaks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a lovely, lovely book 22 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Of all the personal development books I have acquired over the past few years (and my personal collections is now quite sizeable) this book is the one that accompanies me at all times--and everywhere (including, yes, the bath!).

This book is all about change--something that most of us confront with trepidation, and try to delay, avoid, fear and hesitate over, because we don't know where it may lead us, because the unknown can be such a scary prospect. Nicola Bunting, however, manages to take away the scariness of it all--in a wonderfully warm and gentle way. (I would not want to give the impression that I found some of my previous readings encouraging, in terms of wanting to "chug" me along positively, they somehow didn't manage to convey the message that it can be done joyfully and playfully in the same way that this book manages to do).

Nicola Bunting's approach is gentle and caring, and in no way ever prescriptive. On the contrary! Reading through it is like talking to a friend: She provides the reader with the space and time to find their way through the maze of change at a comfortable pace, and encourages you to be gently kind to yourself as you do.
The manner in which she approaches the whole notion of change is to really see it as a gradual progression. So, before charging along at breakneck speed to change absolutely everything immediately (which I have been known to do, once I decided change was what I wanted!), I discovered that it is actually essential to take a step back before moving forward--and sort all the accumulated baggage--to really get to grips with "who" I am (which has been a liberating discovery!).

5.0 out of 5 stars The book I wish I had written! 29 May 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Who Do You Want To Be is one of the best books on the market for anyone with a call to adventure, looking for a road map to a better life. Nicola's book is about change from the inside-out, starting with discovering your own 'feelgood factor' -what you need to do to wake up feeling energized and looking forward to the day ahead. She then guides readers through managing fear, getting your needs met and self-care and self-esteem.

Nicola will help you to explore your personalty type, your strengths and your values and how to make the most of that knowledge so that your life becomes an expression of who you are. You will bring all of this together in a vision for your life and a plan for how to start making it happen.

To make the most of this book you will need a notebook and pen in hand and be prepared to do the exercises along the way. If you do, extraordinary things may well happen.

If you only read one self-help book in your life, this is the one to read!

I didn't find anything new here. I read the introduction as a sample on kindle and found it interestingly written, especially the use of the hero's journey metaphor (Joseph Campbell). However the rest of the book didn't live up to the beginning. The call to adventure is the only bit of the hero's journey she mentions. She overuses two phrases: "The list is endless", and "I believe". The latter phrase is often used in "change your life" books, and always weakens the argument for me, as it sounds as if it is some pet theory of the author, and not based on any real evidence.
On the plus side, she does cover a lot of ground, including enneagrams and other personality tests in some detail. But then oddly nothing on identifying strengths other than doing an online test and buying another book (not one of hers).
I prefer books with a list of activities to do at the end of the chapter. There are activities suggested, but I didn't find them all that easy to identify, and some examples of how other people had completed the activities would be helpful as well.
If you haven't ready any self help change your life books before, then this is probably as good as any and covers a lot of ground. But there are so many out there already, I was hoping for some new material.
