A wonderful addition to how turbo jet engines were created. Prior to reading this book, I always felt that Britians contribution to turbo jet science was inferior to every other nation. However, Frank Whittle was the first to create equations which could accurately predict any future turbo jet performance. He had a lot of education from the RAF and the RAF's (ROTC) program. Frank was a scientist and an engineer. One thing left out of his political problems prior to and during WWII, might have been caused by companies with ties to the Germans. He discovered that gas, as well as liquids turn in a vortex, like drain water does. Which greatly enhanced the efficiency of later turbines of any kind. Amazing mind.
I liked the various improvements discovered. It seems hard to understand why they did not try spraying kerosene (fuel) with nozzles much earlier, rather than using the heat from combustion to cause the kerosene to boil into a vapor. Oil burners today use spray nozzles. Whittle's engine were more reliable than german turbo jets were, from the very start. Thank you Frank for having the foresight to have a biography made.
