Book Description

Action, terror and a heroine with second sight! You'll find all of that and more in White Witch. This novella opens Lyn Horner's award-winning series, Texas Devlins.

Jessie Devlin is what her Irish ancestors might call a "white witch." She has a disturbing ability to glimpse the future. When she foresees Chicago on fire, it's a soul-searing experience. Far worse is the terrible night in 1871 when she and her family and thousands of Chicagoans run for their lives from the towering flames. Worst of all are the horrific nightmares Jessie suffers for months after the destruction.

However, when Jessie’s dreams suddenly begin showing her a strange man with gentle, loving eyes who saves her from a fiery death, she becomes convinced they are destined to meet and fall in love. But will her father give her time to find her dream hero or will he force her into marriage with the wrong man? How can she save herself from such a fate?

More About the Author

Lyn Horner resides in Texas with her husband and an ever-changing band of cantankerous, beloved cats. Trained in the visual arts, Lyn first worked as a fashion illustrator and later as an art instructor for Art Instruction Schools (famous for their "Draw Me" heads.) After quitting work to raise her children, she took up writing as a creative outlet. This hobby grew into a love of historical research and the crafting of passionate romances based on that research.

The author says, "Writing a book is much like putting together a really big jigsaw puzzle. It requires endless patience and stubborn determination to see your ideas come to life. Once hooked on the process, you're forever addicted."

A member of Romance Writers of America and Celtic Hearts Romance Writers, Lyn is a former vice president of North Texas Romance Writers. In November 2010, Lyn launched DARLIN' DRUID and has recently released DASHING DRUID, the second book in her TEXAS DRUIDS trilogy. These epic western romances feature a trio of uniquely gifted siblings. Descended from legendary Irish Druids, each possesses a special psychic power that influences their lives. The author knows such powers truly exists, having experienced prophetic dreams herself.

Lyn has also published a memoir titled SIX CATS IN MY KITCHEN. Six special cats are the headline-grabbing stars, but the book also touches upon subjects such as grieving the loss of loved ones, living with a disability, and coping with major life changes. It's liberally illustrated with photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent short story...prequel. 19 Mar. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
White Witch is the prequel to Lyn Horner's Darlin' Druid; it sets the background and introduces the characters of Jessie and Tye, children of Irish immigrants to the USA in 1871. A short story that is extremely well written, the historically accurate events of the Chicago Fire of Octobert that year. What Lyn has done is placed her characters, the father and adult children and brought to life, realistically and empathetically, through story, the reenactment of witnessing and fleeing an immense fire that destroyed the then City of Chicago. The perfect combination of fuel...the tinder dry wood, oxygen and heat from that hot August wind, that in turn fanned and spread this devastating fire and it's aftermath are all here from the grabbing of their few belongings to fear of their horse as they try to get to safety. I had wondered when I saw the title White Witch what the paranormal content might be, but in this it refers to uncannily accurate realistic premonitions. It is all reasonably plausible. It even considers the symptoms and effects of the then unknown Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, that people would have had no choice but to cope with in those days. Standard of English is generally very good...my most constructively critical comment would be slight overuse of And/But conjunctions some of which could be avoided. That said it's a very good prequel and just hits the 5 stars in my opinion. I look forward to reading more of Lyn Horner's Druid series.

Format:Kindle Edition
I have to say I'm a great admirer of Lyn Horner's effortless writing.

This is a great short story that introduces Jessie Devlin, a feisty Irish immigrant living in Chicago. Ideally read this before moving onto her druid books.

Great writing, Lyn.

This novella gives you an introduction to Jessie and Ty and Jessie's premonition that shows her the Great Fire of Chicago and how it affects their lives. It is very well written and certainly describes in detail the fire and the effect. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the rest of the Druid series.

This is a must read to introduce Darlin Druid by Lynn Horner and ultimately Dearest Druid. It introduces the characters and the reasons for their move to the west.

4 stars for this first book in the texas devlin series will fill in the gaps and give you a more exciting understanding of Jessie Devlin and her and her siblings special powers. Jessie is hounted by night mares and visions of a great fire in chicago. even though she has warned her family she doesn't know when the fire will occure and when it does her whole family has to fight to survive and start anew. But the family is never the same. this book sets the stage for the others. You will be so cought up with this remarkable family that you will thurst to read the rest in the series which I have rated 4 and higher. Enjoy: darlin Irish (Jessies story),
Dashing Irish ( Tye's story), and Dearest Irish ( Rose's story)

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for fans of history, paranormal, and/or romance 18 April 2014
By E. VanZwoll - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this short story from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Set in Chicago in 1871, this prequel introduces you to three of the Devlin family members: Jessie, Tye, and their father Seamus. Born in Ireland and now living in the Chicago after a brief stint in New York City, the Devlin family has one secret that they try to keep from the people they know... for both Jessie & Tye have inherited abilities from the Druids that were their ancestors.

The beginning of the book sees Jessie having a vision of the entire city of Chicago on fire. Tye believes her, as he was able to sense her fear using his own gift, but their father denies her vision until the evening of the Great Chicago Fire. It's obvious that the author of this novel researched both the city of Chicago and the fire. I am also familiar with Chicago, as it was before the fire and as it is now, and this made the fear more real to me since I would picture their struggle through the city streets, trying to survive. The imagery is very powerful, and I will admit that I cried while reading this novel.

This short story works as a stand alone story, but luckily there are other novels in this series so that I can learn more about these characters, their history, and their future.
