Product Description

Dissolute nobles, master spies, and the unlikeliest of heroes, Alec and Seregil have survived exile, treachery, and black magic. But the road that lies ahead is the most hazardous they’ve ever traveled. For with enemies on all sides, they must walk a narrow path between good and evil where one misstep might be their last.

Having escaped death and slavery in Plenimar, Alec and Seregil want nothing more than to go back to their nightrunning life in Rhíminee. Instead they find themselves saddled with Sebrahn, a strange, alchemically created creature—the prophesied “child of no woman.” Its moon-white skin and frightening powers make Sebrahn a danger to all whom Alec and Seregil come into contact with, leaving them no choice but to learn more about Sebrahn’s true nature.

With the help of trusted friends and Seregil’s clan, the duo set out to discover the truth about this living homunculus—a journey that can lead only to danger or death. For Seregil’s old nemesis Ulan í Sathil of Virèsse and Alec’s own long-lost kin are after them, intent on possessing both Alec and Sebrahn. On the run and hunted, Alec and his comrades must fight against time to accomplish their most personal mission ever.

The White Road is the fifth installment in Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner series, and concludes the story arc begun in Shadows Return. Having escaped the clutches of Plenimaran alchemist Charis Yakhobin, Alec and Seregil are faced with the problem of what to do about Sebrahn, the child-like alchemical being who can kill as well as heal. The paperback edition features another beautiful character illustration (right) by Michael Komarck, this time of Alec - appropriately enough, since this time he is the one making the difficult choices.

I have to admit that I found the first half of this book rather slow. It mostly consists of Alec and Seregil travelling back to Aurenan and encountering a mixed welcome from various `faie communities. The only real tension came from the occasional scenes from the bad guys' point of view, revealing that Alec and Seregil will not be safe for long.

By the middle of the book, however, the pace picks up and accelerates towards an action-packed finale. Once or twice the suspense was punctured, rather than heightened, by the fact that we the readers can see what all sides are up to, but on the whole it worked well. There was one plot thread that wasn't tied up, but maybe Flewelling is saving that for the next book?

Overall, a solid addition to the series that nonetheless for me fell a little short of the emotionally satisfying heights of Shadows Return. Still, I'm looking forward to Book 6, The Casket of Souls, due out this summer. It's about time our boys got back to some serious nightrunning!

I only started the Nightrunner series when a friend of mine sent me the first book for my birthday and I've been hooked ever since. Naturally, I gobbled up the first three within a couple of weeks, took a break before reading the fourth one and then finally decided to pre-order The White Road. It was interesting and a little disheartening to read some of the negative reviews for Shadows Return but I personally enjoyed it very much, though you can see the difference between the first three and the fourth in terms of style.

Honestly, I think these last two books had to be different if you're looking at the time between and Flewelling had a slightly different audience to address when writing these books. It is all part of the evolutionary cycle of writers and style and without it, things tend to become a little monotonous. The White Road was a little more action-packed than its predecessor, and it was a great insight into Alec's background and his roots. Rieser was a particular star in the book and a character I enjoyed immensely. He delivered tension, drama and compassion and the delivery of the Hâzadriëlfaie was another joy as they're completely different from most Aurenfaíe, with a strong sense of pride and determination that was as frustrating as it was admirable.

Sebrahn was another heartbreaking character and the choices Alec had to make left me tearful on a couple of occasions. I think a lot of it was the dynamic between Sebrahn, Alec and Seregil as it was a mixture of mistrust and hope and Alec was wonderful and big-hearted as always and I sent my heart out to him. Seregil was his usual awesome self although there were hints of something darker and certain tragic moments really left me biting my lip and worrying for him. Another major bonus of this book for me was the fact that Micum was back! I did want more action from Thero, but what we got was just like the good ol' days and it was so wonderfully nostalgic.

The ending was open; just as it should be because it leaves the next book fresh and fabulous in the making. I was pretty upset to have finished the book as fast as I did and although Summer Players is in the making (as Flewelling said on her blog, anyhow) it's still going to be a long wait but I'm sure it's going to be worth it.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed The White Road as it was a good return to the drama, intrigue and suspense that everybody fell in love with in the first place. The relationship between Seregil and Alec is stronger than ever and all those wonderful side characters were a bunch of fun. Lynn Flewelling's novels haven't changed so much as evolved and I believe we'll be in for a pleasant surprise by the time the next book comes out.

I really enjoyed this book, much more action packed than Shadows return. The relationship between Alec and Sergil was back on track. It was wonderful to finally meet more of Sergil's family and for Alec to have a bit more knowledge about his. There is some real heart warming moments for Alec and Sebrham (sorry think I spelt that incorrectly). Hoping there is much more as the ending was left open.
