Product Description

Review

A journey-book in the tradition of Basho's Narrow Road To A Far Province, mixing poetry, prose and meditation. Jamie Whittle is never blind to modernity's grip on the river, but never deaf to the river's old magic either. - Robert Macfarlane, author of Mountains of the Mind and The Wild Places --Robert Macfarlane

Product Description

In White River Jamie Whittle embarks on a foot journey from the estuary to the source of the River Findhorn in Moray, returning by canoe. In doing this he has many encounters with local people and the history of the region, as well as reflecting on humanity's present relationship with nature. It is a return to home territory for him after travelling the world. White River is a new combination of factual and poetic writing, as beautiful as its subject. It will have many imitators and is destined to become a classic of outdoor writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep ecology from an indigenous Scot, 5 Dec 2007

Never let it be said that deep ecology is a Californian import to Scotland. Here, in the footsteps of such Scots as John Muir and Nan Shepherd, is a sharing of the meaning of a river by somebody who grew up along its banks and, in this book, walks them all the way to the source and then canoes back down again. "Findhorn" has come to mean many things to many people. Here is the deep magic of the Earth, emerging from the nature of this place, and captured by the love that Jamie Whittle has cherished into the crafting of this fine work that will please the ecologist and the poet in equal measure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime and Exceptional, 8 Sep 2010

This review is from: White River: A Journey up and down the River Findhorn (Paperback)
Jamie Whittle travelled from the mouth of the River Findhorn to its source by foot and then canoes back down again. But this is not just an account of his adventure travels but also an essay about Deep Ecology, about our own connection to the natural world, how we perceive our environment and what's wrong with our current approach.
It shows that he has studied extensively, his knowledge of "things" is very detailed. I particularly enjoyed his theory of the Salmon replacing GDP as a measure of wellbeing of the population. And don't knock this until you have read it.

The only aspect of this book that coudl criticise is, that it was way too short.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book about the most beautiful river in Scotland, 28 Nov 2007
By
This review is from: White River: A Journey up and down the River Findhorn (Paperback)
A long overdue addition to the small body of literature about this most wild, changeable of Scottish rivers and the magical landscape it has created along its passage to the sea. A fine piece of travel writing in its own right it is sensitively illustrated by Jo Darling.
Nb It is PAPERBACK not as erroneously stated at the time of writing this: 'Leatherbound.'
