DVD Description

The White Planet is an extraordinary documentary that examines the impact that global warming is having on the adorable, yet endangered denizens of the North Pole. Featuring astonishing cinematography often at breathtaking proximity, the film makes stars of the local wildlife who prove themselves to be as idiosyncratic, funny and charming as anything that the Ice Age films could come up with – seals with inflatable nostrils, giant walruses with unicorn-like horns (the narwhals) and half a million caribou who make up the world’s second largest yearly migration – but only if the weather report is promising enough.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: French ( Dolby Digital Stereo ), English ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Cast/Crew Interview(s), Featurette, Interactive Menu, Making Of, Scene Access, Teaser(s), Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: Filmmakers Thierry Piantanida, Thierry Ragobert, and Jean Lemire explore the unexpectedly complex ecosystem of the Arctic in a fascinating documentary that proves the vast frozen north is much, much more than simple ice and snow. From the polar bears, Arctic fox, and caribou herds that move across the blinding white surface of the land to the massive Beluga whales that navigate the icy waters below, Piantanida, Ragobert, and Lemire's film seeks not to examine one particular life form, but rather to seek better understanding of just how life continues to thrive in such an uninviting terrain by documenting all four seasons in the Artic. A breathtaking look at the aurora borealis boasts nature's beauty as few who live outside of this land may have ever experienced, and a thoughtful meditation on the ebb and flow of life there reveals a remarkable array of life-forms that could well rival the Galápagos in terms of ecological diversity. ...The White Planet ( La plančte blanche )

A wonderful photographic treat. Calm, relaxing, inspiring. Slow-paced, so there is time to take in the amazing scenery and the animals who are the only 'actors' in this film, and imaginatively coupled to music and wordless singing to enhance the whole experience. The film follows the life of the Canadian Arctic, and parts of Greenland, over the course of a whole year, on and under the ice and on the land. Commentary (in English) is very sparing and unobtrusive, allowing the images and music to speak for themselves.
This is a film I shall return to again and again, whenever I need to unwind and de-stress!
The extras on the disc about the making of the film and the music are in French but with English subtitles.

A master piece 25 Jan 2009

How comes nobody speaks about that documentary? I guess it is due to a lack of promotion by the international distributors. But this collection of incredible scenes about the Arctic ocean, perfectly musically mixed, surpasses similar documentaries like The March of the Emperor - and without the melodramatic comments. Absolutely stunning are the scenes of the caribous marche, the hunt by the whales, the beluga's, and in general the landscapes. This is not to learn much as the comments are more emotive than instructive. This is a discovery dream, to add to anyone's collection.

I'm a bit of a nature documentary buff and I wonder why on earth this failed to come on my radar for so long until Amazon recommended it to me- like the other reviewer says, quite possibly due to lack of promotion and distribution, which is a real shame because this is one of the most spectacular documentaries I've ever seen. It ranks high up there with the likes of 'Life' and 'Planet Earth' and I wish I'd found it sooner. This is definitely one to watch over and over, each time picking up on something you missed the first time. I don't quite know what it is- probably just a culmination of everything from the filmography to the subject matters featured, but this documentary just had me captivated from start to finish.

The camera work is positively astonishing and the scenery is beautiful. I found myself wishing I could just take stills from some of the shots and put them on my wall, they're that fantastic. There's narration too, but not so much that you find yourself torn between listening and watching, agog. There's also perfectly chosen music to fit in with the on-screen action. Shots of Beluga whales swimming were just magical and scenes with a mother polar bear and her cubs under the snow were mesmerising but there's so many more animals featured that there's something for everyone.

Definitely buy this DVD, watch it and tell all your friends- you won't regret it!
