This was very much an overlooked film by many, which I find disheartening because it has become one of my favourite movies of all time. However, the music, by Thomas Newman no-less, is part of the reason the film had such an impact on me. For anyone who knows Thomas Newman's work - this will not come as a shock, as it is very much Thomas Newman in all his pride and glory. This is one of his more toned down soundtracks (think the piano pieces of American Beauty), mixed in wonderfully with the ambient sounds reminiscent of Brian Eno, Harold Budd and Craig Armstrong. Nice, minimalist piano arpeggios, coupled with string quartets, electronic sounds and the emotional impact Thomas Newman has become famed for are present here in what is my favourite score he has done yet (yes, even better than The Shawshank Redemption and American Beauty).
If you're a fan of Thomas Newman, I don't need to convince you, you should buy this to add to your collection as it is truly beautiful, and a very relaxing listen. If you haven't heard Thomas Newman before, watch this film... this film which is truly magnificent, by the way, and see what you think of the music, and once you've realised how beautiful it is, come back and purchase.
