5.0 out of 5 stars White Oleander 9 Mar 2009
By J. Hull
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This was very much an overlooked film by many, which I find disheartening because it has become one of my favourite movies of all time. However, the music, by Thomas Newman no-less, is part of the reason the film had such an impact on me. For anyone who knows Thomas Newman's work - this will not come as a shock, as it is very much Thomas Newman in all his pride and glory. This is one of his more toned down soundtracks (think the piano pieces of American Beauty), mixed in wonderfully with the ambient sounds reminiscent of Brian Eno, Harold Budd and Craig Armstrong. Nice, minimalist piano arpeggios, coupled with string quartets, electronic sounds and the emotional impact Thomas Newman has become famed for are present here in what is my favourite score he has done yet (yes, even better than The Shawshank Redemption and American Beauty).

If you're a fan of Thomas Newman, I don't need to convince you, you should buy this to add to your collection as it is truly beautiful, and a very relaxing listen. If you haven't heard Thomas Newman before, watch this film... this film which is truly magnificent, by the way, and see what you think of the music, and once you've realised how beautiful it is, come back and purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Newman's best 8 July 2013
Format:Audio CD
I don't know about you but when I listen to a soundtrack / score I play the 'association' game. I pick of pieces and match them to sequences in the movie.

This is not the case in Thomas Newman's White Oleander - which is why it's so special. The soundtrack is seamless, tracks flow and compliment each other beautifully - there is a recurring piano tune played throughout which is absolutely ethereal. I can only pick out scenes if I read the title of the song.

Newman has this ability to create atmosphere and mood, so White Oleander is best listened to when engaging in silent, gentle activities like watching snow fall, creative endeavours, steaming baths and empty evenings. I listen when I can't sleep or when I'm being haunted by memories.

Do yourself a favour, listen to the Amazon samples and purchase!
Other awesome Newman scores: Meet Joe Black, American Beauty, Shawshank redemption, Horse Whisperer

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 11 Nov 2003
By Syd - Published on Amazon.com

This soundtrack is pure beauty. Pure melodies, haunting rhythms, it is the quintessence of Janet Fitch's excellent novel. The sountrack beautifully captures light, airy perfection, and mixes it with darker, more thoughtful sounds. Very short, only about 30 minutes, but worth it.
The sountrack to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting and Beautiful! 5 Nov 2002
By Ryan - Published on Amazon.com

The film White Oleander, which was a good adaption of the powerful novel, has a deep and heart breaking score byu Thomas Newman. Newman also composed the unforgettable score to American Beauty. The music in White Oleaner is soothing at times as well as haunting. Tracks 2, 9 and 16 contain the chilling beat that makes this soundtrack so good. Note: This is the score (there are no lyrics)Well none are needed. White Oleander's soundtrack is a must have.

a great soundtrack with haunting vibes, but pure heaven. it pieces the movie very well as one.
