I felt like I grew up with the hero of this story, Nicholas Linnear. I've been reading the books since I was a teenager, but after waiting several years to pick this one up again to finish it off, I must say I was disappointed. Though a wonderful writing style (this is the only author who's made me feel for a moment that I've actually seen and smelt the world he describes), I find the storyline lacks imagination, as if he's written without thought. The climax is terrible. It slowly builds, but leaves you deflated. After reading through several inches of book you expect more. I found myself finishing it off then through a sense of duty. For the same reason I'll probably read the remaining books in this series. I just hope they have more to offer than White Ninja.
