Book Description

14 Aug 2014 Spider Shepherd

Dan 'Spider' Shepherd is used to putting his life on the line - for his friends and for his job with MI5. So when one of his former apprentices is kidnapped in the badlands of Pakistan, Shepherd doesn't hesitate to join a rescue mission.

But when the plan goes horribly wrong, Shepherd ends up in the hands of al-Qaeda terrorists. His SAS training is of little help as his captors beat and torture him.

Shepherd's MI5 controller Charlotte Button is determined to get her man out of harm's way, but to do that she's going to have to break all the rules. Her only hope is to bring in America's finest - the elite SEALs who carried out Operation Neptune Spear - in a do-or-die operation to rescue the captives.

White Lies is a fast paced, seat-of-your-pants thriller which will have you hooked from the first page until the last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to his best 26 Aug 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've read all 11 [now]. After the last [10th] outing for 'Spider' I thought the series had possibly run its course as it was rather disappointing - how wrong I was. This is Stephen Leather back to his best in a highly topical story as things turned out.
This book dispenses with some of the original characters that were getting a little 'tired' and brings back a few from the past.
You won't enjoy this book if you're a misguided religious fanatic - normal people will love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great action thriller 26 Aug 2014
By Suzanne
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I always look forward to the new Stephen Leather books, especially the Spider series. I wasn't disappointed. This is one of the best-action from beginning to the end. White Lies is probably not the Spider novel to read first in the series, as it assumes a familiarity with the main characters. The earlier books also focus more on Spiders home life and the challenges he faces as a single parent, whereas this book is all about his day job. I loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truth or dare 14 Aug 2014
By Nick Brett TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I was lucky and received an advance copy of this, the 11th Spider Shepherd thriller.

Stephen Leather once again provides an intelligent thriller that cranks up the tension while exploring some uncomfortable themes. As an author he allows his characters to grow and evolve and tries not to just repeat the same types of storyline.

For me White Lies is about loyalty and how far you are prepared to go to achieve your aims. When an intelligence agent is identified and interrogated by terrorists on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border, Spider joins a local assault team to rescue him and things go horribly wrong…

Sufficient scene setting is in place that we understand and care about the variety of characters here and as readers we are conflicted by both ‘sides’ doing what they have to in order to get answers, one side we will cheer and obviously be outraged by the other – it’s quite a subtle way to get you to not look at things in terms of black and white. Stephen Leather’s books are all about shades of grey.

This is also a book where Spider’s boss, Charlie Button really comes into her own. Along with Spider she had moved into the intelligence services a couple of books back, but now we see her in her element, confident, tough, and willing to cross the line for her people. She has become a force to be reckoned with. Great to also see more of characters from previous books including the mysterious Richard Yokely.

I am an obvious fan of the series but this is another great entry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book 25 Aug 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Awesome book. Fast paced roller coaster of a book. Just couldn't put it down. The twists and turns had me hooked from page one. I was gutted when it was over at the last page. I always feel bereft when his novels end. Love Stephen Leathers Dan Shepherd and can't wait till the next edition. Long may he continue.

I've thoroughly enjoyed each and every spider book so far, but it's needing a bit if a shake up. Each of the last few books has been following the exact same formula. Read more
