Product Description

All Liz Houston wants is to keep her head above the financial white waters of her life. Somehow, though, other people, including ex-husband Hugh, repeatedly get in the way.

Hugh just wants a quiet life and to be there for the people he cares about. Caring for Liz does not lead to a quiet life.

Moocher, Liz's Border Collie, wants to be where all the crumbs are, he wants to keep all his paws, but most of all he wants to keep Liz company as she rides the rapids of her life.

Add in odd-shoe-wearing lodger Simon, Git-next-door, a lost brother, an illicit fortune stashed away decades ago, a trio of part-time thugs, kidnappings, a tree-climbing tortoise and a dog-flap with a story of its own, and it becomes apparent that a few white lies (and custard creams) between friends are the least of Liz's problems.

Jill Mansell (internationally best-selling author) said of this book: "Susan Alison has written a lovely, quirky romp packed with off-the-wall characters - original, intriguing and great fun!"

When I purchased this, I saw that it had won an award linked to Katie Fforde and there was a quote from Jill Mansell in the description- so I was expecting a light and fluffy chick lit novel along the same lines as the work of two of my favourite authors. Well, I soon realised I was mistaken (and probably hadn't read the description properly) when after only a few pages the main character had been told by her overly friendly ex husband that he was engaged to someone else, two suspicious lodgers had moved into her house, and she'd found a finger in the fridge when she'd gone for the millk for her morning coffee (which had been cling filmed and presented on a pretty plate, of course). And the story goes on from there-not the most conventional of starts! Having finished the book this morning, I am having difficulty placing it in a genre- is it chick lit? Is it a crime mystery? Is it a comedy caper? I'm really not sure. But what I can say is that I really enjoyed this. The plot is absolutely off the wall, but that's all part of the charm of this book. The unconventional plot and crazy characters draw you in and you can't help but read on to find out what will happen next. I notice the author's next book was advertised at the end of this, and I'll definitely be keeping my eye out for it. I recommend this to anyone looking for a light hearted summer read that's just a bit different from the norm!

Whilst creating my kindle book wishlist in preperation for my upcoming birthday gift (a kindle!) I stumbled across white lies and custard creams and was drawn to the title and the picture straight away so added it to my list

Because of the low 78p price it was the first book that i excitedly downloaed at 6am after opening my kindle as i was expecting amazon gift cards later in the day so didn't want to buy anything that was gonna cost to much... I was not dissapointed!

It was a great read, funny and a bit off the wall but also romantic at the same time.

Unexpected delight 21 Sep 2011

I loved this book, particularly the author's voice. She has a real talent for finding the crazy corners of characters whom the world thinks are normal but the privileged reader knows better. This book is like real life with added pep, better timing and some creative canine input. A keeper.

Garbage
This book is awful. The plot(for lack of a better word) is all over the place. It is very painful reading and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, even if it's free.

Whhat!
This book was so strange - I really can't imagine anyone living like this but then again - it is fantasy! Far fetched in so many ways but on the whole, enjoyable.

Trying too hard to make it funny
There was far too much confusion, and no character you could really like. The main character didn't seem real, nobody would have such stupid thoughts as she had or did such silly... Read more

Didn't like
I thought the antics of the heroin were completely unbelieveable and too daft to laugh at, although I did stick it out to the bitter end.
