Book Description

6 April 1995

Sean Doyle is no stranger to violence. As a member of the Counter Terrorist Unit he's seen more than his fair share of it.

And it seems his intimate acquaintance with death and brutality is set to continue, as he investigates the hijack of an army weapons convoy in Northern Ireland. Managing to infiltrate the organisation, he soon makes some disturbing discoveries: the body of an IRA informer stuffed with heroin, and an IRA safe house full of Chinese Triads.

With a wave of violence sweeping across Britain, Doyle soon realises the stakes have been raised to an alarming degree. The evidence points to an unholy war between two Triad groups with the IRA behind one of them. Motive? Only Doyle can find out, and he must do so before the carnage spirals out of control...

Product Description

Review

Skilfully unpleasant... a compulsively disturbing shocker (SUNDAY TIMES)

It's suffused with explicit, heavy-duty violence. And who can fail to warm to an author who gives equal weight to quotes from John Keats, Nietzsche and Iron Maiden? (THR DARK SIDE)

The man who writes what others are afraid even to imagine (SUNDAY TIMES)

Shaun Hutson is a true voice of horror in the nineties (SUNDAY EXPRESS)

As a creator of unpretentious balls-out shockers, he's unbeatable (TIME OUT)

Probably the most complete novel yet from a writer who deserves wider credit than he is usually accored... Arguably the UK's best horror writer (Ultrakill)

A well-structured, tightly plotted thriller (Eastern Daily Press)

Hutson makes a canny move sideways with this relentless narrative that enters contemporary thriller territory... breathless action (PUBLISHING NEWS)

Here we have one of the successful literary careers of the day (Private Eye)

Shaun Hutson writes in a way that is both compelling and exciting and the energy of his storytelling is awesome (City Lites)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Return of Doyle 3 Jan 2009
Format:Paperback
Hutson does a detour from horror in this novel as he tells a tale more in keeping with high octane thriller. Once more Doyle is thrown into a clash with the IRA. Throw in the Triads and a load of stolen weapons, light the blue touch paper and stand back. High speed plot and tons of violent clashes between the triads culminating in a chinatown showdown makes this another great Hutson Novel. Buy it now!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Indirect sequel to Renegades 21 Jun 2012
By Ash
Format:Kindle Edition
A welcome return to Hutson's finest lead character, as always there is no fat on his work and the plot unravels with a breathtaking pace.

Personally I preferred Renegades due to the supernatural slant, do be aware that this novel is an action thriller and not a horror in the traditional sense. That said, Hutson still makes for fun reading providing you aren't put off by gratuitous violence as he does enjoy to describe in a few paragraphs what a bullet will do to a human body!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not one of Hutson's best. 21 Feb 2000
By G.Spider - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Sorry, but I just couldn't get into this one, was about halfway through when I gave up. There are plenty of shootings and the like but they never seem to come together to form a story, and there were no sympathetic characters to identify with. Fans of thrillers might be entertained, however.
