Read the reviews of this one and thought I'd give it a go. Not a zombie novel aficionado, but I really enjoyed Mira Grant's 'Newsflesh' novels and was looking for something different than my normal sci-fi to read. All I can say is that you could do much much worse give this series a try.
I read this first novel in about 5 hours, then bought and read the subsequent 3 in another 3 days.
I love a good 'survival against the odds' story - and these novels really don't disapoint. The main protagonist, John Talon, is a school administrator with a baby son left to find his way when the usual fast moving zombie virus sweeps the USA. But truthfully, that's pretty much where the cliches end. John Talon is a man with a vision, the willpower to move it forward, and the skills to complete the mission. A real 'outside-the-box' thinker (although it seems obvious that some of the outside thinking is a bit of a plot setup), John starts the country moving back to civilisation.
Agreed - there are few suspensions of belief required. For example, John moving through a zombie infestation with his baby son in a trailer linked to back of a bicycle seems a little far fetched. Considering the premise of superacturate zombie hearing, fair enough - go for the nearly silent bicycle. But would the squealing baby not make for an attractant?
Despite these moments - and they are few - The White Flag of The Dead Series is a very very enjoyable read. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.
