White Flag of the Dead: Book 1
Millions died when the Enillo Virus swept the earth. Millions more were lost when the victims of the plague refused to stay dead, instead rising to slaughter and feed on those left alive. For survivors like John Talon and his son Jake, they are faced with a choice: Do they submit to the dead, raising the white flag of surrender? Or do they find the will to fight, to try and hang on to the last shreds or humanity?

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down. 19 Oct. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded this book on a whim when I was bored one night and found myself unable to put it down! It's well written and fast paced with lots of action and gore. I have read a lot of Zombie novels and often find the characters and their actions completely unbelievable, but the hero in this book is definitely switched on and believable.

5.0 out of 5 stars get busy livin', or get busy dyin' 10 Nov. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Read the reviews of this one and thought I'd give it a go. Not a zombie novel aficionado, but I really enjoyed Mira Grant's 'Newsflesh' novels and was looking for something different than my normal sci-fi to read. All I can say is that you could do much much worse give this series a try.

I read this first novel in about 5 hours, then bought and read the subsequent 3 in another 3 days.

I love a good 'survival against the odds' story - and these novels really don't disapoint. The main protagonist, John Talon, is a school administrator with a baby son left to find his way when the usual fast moving zombie virus sweeps the USA. But truthfully, that's pretty much where the cliches end. John Talon is a man with a vision, the willpower to move it forward, and the skills to complete the mission. A real 'outside-the-box' thinker (although it seems obvious that some of the outside thinking is a bit of a plot setup), John starts the country moving back to civilisation.

Agreed - there are few suspensions of belief required. For example, John moving through a zombie infestation with his baby son in a trailer linked to back of a bicycle seems a little far fetched. Considering the premise of superacturate zombie hearing, fair enough - go for the nearly silent bicycle. But would the squealing baby not make for an attractant?

Despite these moments - and they are few - The White Flag of The Dead Series is a very very enjoyable read. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to hate it but I couldn't 18 Sept. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really did want to hate this book. The hero is just too perfect and I felt like I should hate him but instead found myself rooting for him. The book is well written, fast paced and above all else, intelligent. I am sick of reading zombie books where stupid people do stupid things whereas this book is from the point of view of someone who is a little more switched on that your average zombie fodder. I would liken it to a zombie "Day of the Triffids".
I have been reading a lot of zombie novels lately (I dream of zombies!) and have to say that this book and the rest of the series are my favourites by far.

3.0 out of 5 stars I surrender 8 Jan. 2014
By Foss
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm a bit premature rating this before I finished it, but I'm not sure I am going to finish it.
The writing is fine and there are plenty of blood-thirsty zombies to keep you entertained. However, it all felt a bit rushed and I can't say I ended up caring if any of the characters live or die. So halfway through I am feeling jaded and skimming pages.
Could also do without endless description of guns - maybe that's just me.
This is reasonable stuff, not terrible, not great either, so a middling 3 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable wish fulfillment 26 Nov. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read a lot of zombie novels, and this is enjoyable but don't let the 5* reviews fool you -it's a decent read but that's all. The writing is ok, the main character is clearly the personification of the author, and there's plenty of wish fulfilment as he's able to take charge after the zombie apocalypse.

As the virus sweeps the world turning people into zombies, it is reasonably well described, although sometimes the main character is a bit slow on the uptake about what's going on. But that's always the problem with a zombie novel - you can't exactly have a character saying "say, this is just like the start of a zombie outbreak film, better start avoiding hospitals...". This does go a bit to the other extreme like "hey, what are all these people doing wondering mindlessly around in the road? Oh well, you'd best go off to work at A&E darling...". Sometimes it reminded me of the bit in Bored of the Rings when Frito falls asleep, lulled by the snuffling noises and clinking of armour below...

So worth a read at 77p. Not sure I'll buy any more in the series tho.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Zombie Novel I've Read 19 Aug. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is by far the best Zombie novel i've read, it's the first of three (so far) by Joseph Talluto. It's a tale in the classic style of Romero, the struggle of daily survival of the individual progressing to a large group as the hero John Talon quickly understands that being "The Last Man on Earth" is not a winning proposition.

This is a MUST READ for all Zombie Fiction Fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read that left me wanting more! 4 Sept. 2013
By Chief.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
White Flag of the Dead follows the story of John Talon as he attempts to survive the initial outbreak of a strange virus which kills its victims only to reanimate them as the walking dead.

One of the first things I enjoyed about the book was that John is just a normal guy - a school administrator, husband and father, with a passing interest in firearms but otherwise no special abilities. He isnt a former special forces soldier (despite his generic macho name), he doesnt have access to the full might of the U.S military, he isnt backed up by a team of Navy SEAL's, he isnt a tactical genius - he's just a normal man wondering what the hell he's supposed to do next.

This volume - the first of six - follows John as he witnesses and desperately tries to survive the initial outbreak, whilst also trying to protect his infant son. Theres alot of trial an error for John as he sees other peoples mistakes get them killed and tries not to mess up himself whilst having to make tough decisions about how to get through the next day alive.

I enjoyed how the author describes the slow creep of the apocalypse, starting with isolated reports not taken seriously, the occasional news story, the odd strange occurance, the eventual awareness that something very wrong was happening followed by the full blown panic created by the fact the dead are walking.

The author does a great job in describing a world slowly going to hell. It doesnt happen overnight - news channels, internet, power and running water all last for weeks and money still has value. Some businesses remain open, hospitals continue to try and operate and deal with an infection they dont understand, law and order exists to a degree.
