Girl Who Got Away

Biography

Biography by Jason Ankeny
The electronic pop chanteuse Dido entered London's Guildhall School of Music at age six; by the time she reached her teens, the budding musician had already mastered piano, violin, and recorder. After touring with a British classical ensemble, she accepted a publishing job. Meanwhile, she sang with a series of local groups before joining the trip-hop outfit ... There is a big difference between just being a 'singer' and being a true 'artist.' Dido does a lot than just sing (as if we all don't already know that). In today's music industry, so many artists aren't content with what they have accomplished in the past and decide to experiment with an array of genres. For some, the experiments are worth the trouble. In Dido's case, however, you simply can't fix something that isn't broken. White Flag is a hauntingly beautiful masterpiece that picks up where Dido's glorious debut album No Angel left off 4 years ago. Indeed, the wait has been agonizing. But, just one listen of White Flag is enough for me to forget about Dido taking so long to make a second album. Dido is so good that she became one of only a small handful of young UK music acts to be certified as a star in the U.S. Hopefully, American radio won't overlook the brilliance of White Flag. With all the garbage on U.S. radio right now, Dido and White Flag are going to be a nice change of pace (and quality).

White Flag was first played on Jo Whiley's show on Radio One and since then, has probably been played at least once a day by most radio networks. It's subject is something that nearly everyone can relate to - not telling someone you love them because you know it could ruin your friendship either with that person, or with your other friends etc etc. Since the first album, her voice seems to have changed slightly, and her range extended but it still retains it's awesomeosity ( if that's a word! ).
Dido has never had a number one single in the U.K. which as most of you Dido fans will agree, is pretty bad. But that is partly due to one thing, her album was out at the same time as the singles, so most people bought the album, and so didn't bother buying the singles as well ( well some Die Hard fans did ).
This time however, the single is out before the new album, so hopefully, she'll get to Number One. And she does deserve to I'm sure you'll agree after the amount of work she's put in.

What can I say! I think this is the first single I have ever pre-orderd before it was released. I head 'White Flag' on the radio and was captivated. It is a georgeous track. The remix is even better, minus the schmaltz, with a more grit and, erm, life. Dido is proving herself as a major artist, with serious staying power now and I hope there is much much more to come.
But anyway; on the single I got there is an extra track; 'Paris' which is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Sorry for being melodramatic but, really, I'd love to know the story behind it.
I dont know if the artists do ever read these (I know I would!) but, Dido, I dont know where it is coming from, but please dont get swallowed up by the industry, keep it real and keep it coming!
Thanks all
Mike

Wow, Well I cannot believe that she did such a good single yet again. I mean these words that she sings mean so much to me.
I fell in love only to get my heart broken and her first album "No Angel" made so much sense back then. Now I am hearing this single and it just make's me love that special someone even more.
For all those people that have been in love and are still in love, then you will love this one. I cannot believe that her music just brings me to tears so easily. It's so beautiful and true in my eyes.
Everyone must buy it, well that's if you like this kind of music. It really can make a lot of sense.

Although incredibly similar to the chilled, gentle sound of Didos previous tracks, this has something else. Its beautiful lyrics combined with Didos emotive vocals produce a fantastic track which is a breath of fresh air from all the cloned pop stars. Cant wait to hear the new album!

White flag is Dido's first single taken from Life For Rent.
1. White Flag - It's a splendid love song. It talks about loving someone and being afraid to tell them so, because it can mess things up.
"I know you think that I shouldn't stil love you or tell you that. But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it, where's the sense in that?"..."I'm in love and always will be"...
White Flag is powerful yet remains simple and pure at the same time. Quite easy to relate to.
2. Paris - a B-side is a folkish song which showcases Dido's voice in all its beauty. With only the guitar and strings, Paris sounds almost like an acapella. Some may find it boring because of that, well, I don't. I think that's what makes this song different and beautiful.
3. Johnny Toobad mix - I don't like remixes in general, they use always the same formula of adding the (same) beats to the song, which I don't find so original. Surprisingly, this one is more interesting then I thought. It's kind of growing on me, but still, it remains just a remix to me.
:o)
