Fascinating 12 Sep 2006
By Shawyer
Format:Paperback
Robust, fast paced and highly readable this account of Robert Rogers' career also gives a vivid picture of the Seven Years War in America more generally. the scholarship is impressive but so too are the character sketches and the deft command of a multi stranded narrative often covering concurrent fighting on several fronts. An excellent introduction to the subject marred only by a lousy cover on my paperback edition. I look forward to the forthcoming biography of Wolfe.

Superb 30 July 2011
Format:Paperback
Well written with an engaging style. Obviously well researched, the book shines a fairly impartial light on Roger's actual deeds giving the reader a chance to make up their own mind on this controversial figure. Good perspective from the French and Indian side is given. A gem!

It seems the only people who get book contracts these days are journalists. On opening my copy of this book I was initially reassured to find that Mr Brumwell has a degree in history. Unfortunately whilst his research is good he has not been able to leave the style of his original profession behind. The constant stream of cliches, mixed metaphors and uncritical use of the theasaurus meant that I had to read this book with gritted teeth, as the author might put it. A pity, but at least I now know more about Rogers and his times.
