Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

There is something blithely inventive about White Death that is unusual in this mildly macho thriller about professional hard men doing their thing. The book starts with two preludes--one about Basques fleeing the Inquisition with relics, another about Nazi aeronauts coming to grief in the Arctic--and almost at once skitters off to deal with the heroic Karl Austin rescuing Danish sailors from a sunken cruiser. Apparently, the cruiser was sunk by the anti-whaling activists its crew was trying to arrest, but Austin, charmed by one of them, rapidly proves not all was as it seems. Meanwhile, other friends of his are investigating the death of a fisherman who had told them about giant hungry salmon in Canada... This is an up to the moment thriller that speculates intelligently about the biotech business, and inventively about the nature of nationhood and what men will do for the people they regard proprietorially as theirs. Austin in particular is the focus of nail-biting action and suspense sequences whether racing through sea caves, dog sledding through New York or sword fighting in a Zeppelin. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Cussler, 26 Aug 2003
The great thing about Cussler's books is that they are unpridictable almost to the end. White Death is no exception.
The usual intruiging prologues make you wonder where the story will lead this time, will we get another dose of Nazi mayhem? Or maybe another pre-Columbian America discovery.
The two prologue stories stay apart for long enough for you to wonder when they might merge in their usual chaotic way, and when they do it sucks you in and doesn't let go.
I've not put this book down since I picked it up.

5.0 out of 5 stars White Death is a whte knuckler, 31 Oct 2003
By J. J Kamlani "jotuj" (Fairfield, Connecticut United States) - See all my reviews
Each new Kurt Austen novel gets better, and better. Mr. Cussler is finally giving Kurt a personality, though somewhat of a clone of Dirk, both personality, and formulawise, we don't mind it, so long as he keeps the story interesting, and moving.
In White death, he chose an evil tribe of eskimos as his villains. The tribe attempts to mutate a species of fish that will devour other fish species, then turn on itself, whiping out all species of gilled reptile.
The story moves along at a good pace, and though the action scenes remind you of a Dirk Pitt escapade, it is thoroughly enjoyable. A fun read. Definitely one of his better books.
Note; Not all the eskimos in this story are evil, just the one evil tribe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Gripping Adventure from the Author, 25 Jul 2007

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)

Clive Cussler was born in 1931 and grew up in Alhambra, California. He attended Pasadena City College before joining the Air Force. He went on to a successful advertising career, winning many national honours for his copywriting. He has also explored the deserts of the American Southwest in search of lost gold mines, dived in isolated lakes in the Rocky Mountains looking for lost aircraft and hunted under the sea for shipwrecks of historic significance, discovering and identifying more than sixty. He is married with three children, and divides his time between Colorado and Arizona. His credentials as a best selling author cannot be doubted and he has a large `stable' of best selling adventure novels.

Yes some of Clive Cussler's books are a little far fetched, to say the least, but surely that is not a negaative thing. Most people read to get away from their everyday life and yes, sometimes to go into a little world of their own. If an adventure story is a little far fetched, so what, it is all part of the enjoyment, after all the books are novels and not meant to be taken to seriously.

White Death is another adventure novel featuring Kurt Austin, leader of the NUMA Special Assignments Team and starts with a confrontation between an environmentalist group and a Danish cruiser, not an earth shattering confrontation in itself, but something that is going to escalate into something far more serious . . .
