About the Author
Larry Watson was born in Rugby, North Dakota, and raised in Bismarck. The winner of numerous literary awards, he won the Milkweed National Fiction Prize, The Mountains & Plains Bookseller Association Regional Book Award, and his novel Montana 1948 was named one of the Best Books of 1993 by both Library Journal and Booklist. He is also the author of In a Dark Time, a novel, Leaving Dakota, a collection of poetry, and Justice, a book of short fiction. He is a recipient of a National Endowment of the Arts award in fiction. Larry Watson teaches English at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point.

Larry Watson does a masterful job of showing how good intentions can go awry. Mostly, he gets into the head of a small town Montana sheriff. His ability to show the thought processes of a person seem uncanny.

White Crosses does not match the quality of one of Watson's earlier books, Montana 1948. The reader is asked to endure a great deal of tedious introspection, and the tone is unvariably bleak and morose. The moral conflicts are intriguing, however, as shades of gray collide with different shades of gray. The books plods along slowly, but picks up near the end.

One reviewer in this series says (s)he "has never read a book in which so much was said about things of no relevance." It's that irrelevant material that makes White Crosses a winner for those who read fiction to find truth. Mr. Watson is a keen observer of the minutiae of human nature, and it's in that minutiae that White Crosses shines. It's the implausibilities of the basic events of plot that drag this book down from the four stars it might otherwise deserve.
