4.0 out of 5 stars The White Cottage Mystery 25 Dec 2012
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
When Eric Crowther is shot dead at the White Cottage there are plenty of people with a motive for killing him but no one seems to have had an opportunity to actually pull the trigger. Chief Inspector W T Challenor and his son, Jerry who happens to be nearby at the time of the shooting are totally puzzled by the case. Solving it takes them to Paris and to the South of France and provides an interesting mystery with some likeable and obnoxious characters.

This is the first book I've read by Margery Allingham and I am looking forward to reading other books by her. It is very much in the spirit of the Golden Age of crime story writing but it will still appeal to modern readers. The motivations of the characters are well done and the characters themselves are believable. There is no on the page violence and no swearing which will appeal to many readers who prefer their crime novels to be puzzles rather than opportunities for graphic violence.

This is an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh or Dorothy L Sayers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read & enjoy 20 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This was Margery Allingham's first detective story, originally serialised in the Daily Express in 1927. The narrative flows as though you are watching a well-constructed movie, which may be down to the happy conjunction of her good writing instincts & careful editing-for-book by her sister Joyce. Copious classic ingredients are here: unusual murder, discoveries, suave detective, passions, blackmail, relevant personal histories, awkward secrets, continental visit... Yet there is something unpretentious about the way this tale is told - with its perceptions & charming English - that makes it a valuable, interesting, (post-)modern read.

5.0 out of 5 stars great old fashioned murder mystery 12 April 2013

Excellently written and plotted. I believed in the characters and enjoyed the deliberate red herrings and the very definite twist to the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Allingham's best
Rather shows its age. Romantic interest a bit stilted. Would appeal to Agatha Christie fans, but sadly not quite so good.

I have never read a Margery Allingham I haven't liked and this is no exception. Her characters seem so real you almost expect to meet them in Tesco and the sense of period is not... Read more

A good little mystery from the Golden Age of crime, when good men were handsome and brave, bad men were weaselly and/or greasy, all murders took place in middle-class country... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars A slightly different Allingham .
Enjoyed it , these characters were new to me ,and while they were not (to me at any rate) as interesting as Mr Campion they still provided civilised entertainment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it.
This was a good story but one which out of sight meant out of mind so not one to live on in your memory. Passes a wet afternoon.

5.0 out of 5 stars The White Cottage Mystery
Read lots of this author years ago, but missed this one. Lived up to my expectations: a good, old-fashioned "who-dunnit".

I've read other Margery Allingham books and thoroughly enjoyed them so I have high hopes for this one. Girlfriend who suggested this title gave it an excellent write up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read
I'm enjoying reading this book at the moment. It features a detective I have not read before, but it ticks all the boxes that would make it appeal to fans of vintage whodunnits.
