Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

5.0 out of 5 stars What A Christmas Cracker! 30 Nov 2002
By C. R. Williams VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
A nice arrangement of styles (and decades) are presented on this album. There are some stompin' rockers to get ya rockin' in ya Christmas stockings "Blue Christmas", Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me" and the riotous "Santa Claus Is Back In Town". If you're in the mood for something a little more mellow, or ya feeling a little blue, then there's the smooth ballads and the cool blues numbers to bring ya down "If Every day Was Just Like Christmas", "Here Comes Santa Claus", "Merry Christmas Baby", "I'll Be Home For Christmas Day" and probably the best version of "White Christmas" I have ever heard.
If you're looking for the more traditional Christmas carols, Elvis presents us with his incredible vocal rang in tracks such as "Silent Night", "The First Noel" & "O Little Town Of Bethlehem".

5.0 out of 5 stars This is just great 12 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Elvis in his arguably most prolific and culturally important period (with the Jordanaires 1950's & 60's) and in festive mood, with sweet swing rythms mixed with a beautiful blend of southern states gospel quartet doo-woop (with christmas bells)...it's gotta be one of the coolest platters to have in your CD Player at christmas. Check out 'Santa bring my baby back to me'...it'll have you tapping your foot and singing in the shower for years to come. I love this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Christmas.............or anytime! 18 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is utterly stunning; and the only christmas album the should be considered essential (apart from El's origianl xmas album).
What can be said about raw, dirty rhythm and blues christmas songs. The likes of "Santa Claus is Back in Town" is excellent, the lyrics and performance outstanding. "Merry Christmas Baby" from 1971 is blues, absolutely incredible and must be considred among the very very best songs Elvis ever made.
The doo-wop/rock n roll version of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" is a masterpiece; although Mr Berlin tried to have it banned, this is unique and compelling.
"Blue Christmas" is here; it had to be, but so is lesser known gems, like "I'll Be Home On Christmas Day", another bluesy/country song. The huge "Why Can't Every Day Be Like Christmas" plus more exceptional rock n roll in the form of "Here Comes Santa Claus" and edspecially "Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me."
A few excellent gospel renditions here also, whlist a couple of misfires in the shape of a bland "Silver Bells", and "Winter Wonderland" do nothing to detract from the magic.
