White Chin 24 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
First novel by this experienced observer of cat behaviour, White Chin is written from the point of view of the cat and the book's strength is that the cat White Chin retains his feline characteristics throughout. The author cleverly avoids the trap of humanising him. The book deals with wildlife in the English countryside red in tooth and claw - illegal and brutal poaching - the problems for the young girl heroine, Kirstie, in coping with and loving all her animals equally and the issues involved in responsible pet ownership. It is funny and sad and moves with a pace. It is exquisitely illustrated throughout in black and white by artist France Bauduin. Catnip is a children's publisher, so I assume it is aimed at the 11+ market, but a cat lover of any age might well enjoy it. I highly recommend it.

As a lover of the author's best-selling "The Cats of Moon Cottage" and its three sequels I had been keenly awaiting this novel for some time. So different from the gentle domesticity of that series about Marilyn's own cats, "White Chin" is the story of a little domestic cat who is dumped from a sack in a wild wood and left to fend for himself. At the tender age of five months White Chin has to learn how to hund for food, find places to shelter and avoid predators. In two dramatic episodes the book highlights darker aspects of country life: the setting of illegal animal traps and the horros of deer poaching.
White Chin's months of woodland adventures and his gradual and wary reintroduction to human company are told with all Marilyn Edwards's tender skill and sensitive observation of nature, making this moving story absorbing reading from start to finish. Although aimed at children of 11 and over, this is a book for both the young and old who love animals and the countryside, and some of my friends will definitely be getting "White chin" for Christmas!

WHITE CHIN 13 Aug 2010
By TOP CAT
Format:Paperback
Best of all what a really striking cover it made me love this little Cat before opening the first page. I'm well past childhood but still wanted to read this book. I read it over the weekend that I got it direct from the author Marilyn Edwards who was really quick in supplying it. I found the antics of the little homeless Cat very enchanting and couldn't put the book down till the very last page. I'm sure it will appeal to young and old Animal or Cat lovers everywhere as its so well written for either age group to enjoy. Marilyn get cracking on the next book please.
