As a middle class white male guiltily reading the inner secrets of black life [...] I found the book dark and cynical. Its fast paced but towards the end you want more explanation of the characters lives, more stories from campus and hillside. I'm a fairly big pynchon fan and I bought the book because it was descirbed as pycnhonesque, thats too easy a bracket to put him in; thankfully Beaty treats intillectuality with complete hostility, I like that! I just closed the book and feel like I've been sent on a white guilt trip, I don't know if thats fair, but I do know I enjoyed it.
