Product Description

Born into a long line of uncle Toms - including an ancestor who escaped into slavery and a relative who set up Malcolm X - Gunnar Kaufman grew up doing the perfect white boy shuffle in Santa Monica. Now the street-stupid kid has to learn - and fast - how to survive the hard-line homeboys of inner-city LA, in one of the funniest, funkiest books for years.

White Boy Shuffle 27 April 2007
Format:Paperback
I absolutley love this book. The style is extremly fluid, thoughtful, and witty, with elements of classic literature mixed with esoteric street slang. Read it if you want to cry until you laugh and laugh until you cry again.

white boys ruffled 15 Dec 2002
Format:Paperback
As a middle class white male guiltily reading the inner secrets of black life [...] I found the book dark and cynical. Its fast paced but towards the end you want more explanation of the characters lives, more stories from campus and hillside. I'm a fairly big pynchon fan and I bought the book because it was descirbed as pycnhonesque, thats too easy a bracket to put him in; thankfully Beaty treats intillectuality with complete hostility, I like that! I just closed the book and feel like I've been sent on a white guilt trip, I don't know if thats fair, but I do know I enjoyed it.

The White Boy Shuffle is a work of absolute genius by Paul Beatty. I first read this book about 3 years ago probably and have since read it many times over. It is a moving journey through the funny, disturbing, scary and plain emotional life of a young black guy living in LA, showing not simply the bad things we hear about the ghettos of that area, but also the friendships and closeness that come with that territory. A must read!!
