Book Description

27 Sep 2012 Whitaker's
An authoritative, quirky trivia book divided into themed chapters. Whitaker's Little Book of Knowledge contains thousands of general knowledge gems: from everything you learned at school to fascinating lists of contemporary 'top-tens', mini-biographies of famous artists and writers, plus condensed guides to films and works of art and literature. In addition, there is a light-hearted journey down memory lane featuring humorous entries on forgotten treasures from different decades and a stand-alone sport chapter with guides to both well-known and obscure sports, key rules, a glossary of terms and short biographies of the world's greatest sporting heroes.

Facts are both newly researched and drawn from the rich treasure-trove of the Whitaker's Almanack archive, which dates back to 1868.

Whitaker's Little Book of Knowledge is a truly unique ready-reference containing fascinating facts for every trivia buff while providing a unique insight into the world from the 19th century through to the present day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Christmas present idea for all ages! 12 Oct 2012
Format:Hardcover
I loved this book. It's a good size and kept me hooked, plus I keep walking past it and dipping back into it again and again. I can see myself buying it for friends and relatives for Christmas, it's the kind of book that keeps all ages enthralled. I would definitely recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Disgrace to the Whitaker Name 1 July 2013
Format:Hardcover
Fortunately, I didn't buy this book but borrowed it from the library. I am a Whitaker fan, and often buy old Whitakers.
This is like many books of Trivia, but unfortunately even less accurate.
It lists longest running TV shows, including Gunsmoke, which ran, by its account, for 20 years, but not Coronation Street.
Its "School Condensed" section appears to have been written by someone who failed his O levels. In the plot synopsis of Ulysses "Molly lays awake" (lays an egg perhaps). In the list of major revolutions, the Glorious Revolution is listed as the 1868 Spanish revolution, seldom called by that name, rather than the British Glorious Revolution of 1688.
In the description of Einstein's theory, the writer equates the c in e=mc with twice the speed of light- erroneous by a factor of approximately 299,999,998.
Worst of all, however, is the book's treatment of the Whitaker heritage. It has copied out the section of the almanac Remarkable Occurrences for one month in each decade. It can't even get this right!! I own the 1899 Whitaker, in which there is a misprint under April 20th - the 1899 edition says "telegraphic communication established between Capetown and (space) lantyre". The copyist had two choices - he could have reproduced the sentence with the misprint (there was a clear gap in the original), or have done some research and worked out that Blantyre, the then capital of the then Nyasaland was intended. He did neither, and capitalised Lantyre, a non-existent city. On April 16th, Whitaker 1899 says, rightly, that the US senate recognised the independence of Cuba - the transcriber says, meaninglessly, that they "reorganised" it.
Whitaker is a proud name. Bloomsbury have degraded it with this tosh.

Received on my Kindle whilst in Portugal and there were lines missing under some categories. There is nothing shown for the human body category - why is this?
