Book Description

7 Mar 2002

There are two basic types of animal in Nature's Kingdom. The first, like lions and turtles, produce many offspring and simply hope that some will survive. The second, like elephants and people, produce one or two at long intervals and make great efforts to rear them. My mother belonged in a class of her own. She produced two at short intervals and made no effort to rear them whatsoever.

Thus Dorothy, aged ten, finds herself making her own way in Sassaspaneck, New York in 1968. Her English father, who never talks above a whisper due to a youthful injury with a cricket ball, has tucked her and her mother away where the potential for embarrassment can be limited. All the other children in town have gone to camp, so Dorothy must provide her own entertainment. She comes across a small, faded zoo on the outskirts of town, and as she begins to get to know the eccentric group of women who live there she begins to discover a world way beyond the one she has glimpsed so far.

Amazon Review

An eccentric cast of characters, human and animal, features in this first novel for adults by comic actress Toksvig. When eleven-year-old tomboy Dorothy Kane moves with her upper-class English parents to the small town of Sassaspaneck, New York, the result is bewilderment on every side. The Kanes are a family of "partial communicators", physically remote and emotionally vague: "I suppose a lot of people have never seen their father naked; I had never seen mine without a tie." Confronted with a 1960s America shaken by a war in Vietnam, by campaigns for civil rights and women's liberation, Dorothy's parents retreat into crisis, leaving her to pick her own, troubled way through the last, crucial summer of her childhood.

She receives help and inspiration from an unlikely source: a trio of women who live on the edge of town in a dilapidated zoo. Gradually she uncovers details of the zoo's flamboyant and tragic history, its origins in passion and extravagant wealth, the secrets and betrayals surrounding its decline. It is a history that touches the lives of all the people of Sassaspaneck. With Dorothy's help, old wounds are healed and new bonds forged, as the women of the town are drawn into a struggle to save the zoo from property developers--and to provide a new home for Artemesia, a tightrope-walking African elephant.

Whistling for the Elephants is a gently comic novel about transformation and the getting of wisdom; about finding the ways to make being a girl "just fine"; and about relearning from the animal kingdom those lessons of love and fidelity that human beings as a species are apt to forget. --Sarah Waters --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is the first book which has ever had this effect on me. I was so disappointed to have reached the end and to have to leave the magic behind that I simply turned back to the first page and carried on reading. And I had to force myself not to do exactly the same thing again afterwards. But I will re-read it, I am certain.

The atmosphere that Sandy creates is amazing, peopled with such strange and eccentric characters, but every one of them totally believable and many of them wonderful role models.

I bought this book thinking it would be a light, funny read and discovered a masterpiece. It has its funny, even surreal moments, but ultimately it is a book with plenty to say about the strength of women and our relationship to animals.

I couldn't recommend this book highly enough, and if there were 6 stars available, it would get them.

Dorothy is a young, English girl who is thrust at the age of ten into an alien world called the USA. Here, she is made an outcast by all the children, but soon finds her way to the local, faded zoo, and is befriended by the eccentric women who own it. This may not sound like anything startling, but Sandi Toksvig manages to juggle subjects like women's liberation, racism, and the Vietnamese War whilst remaining comical and sympathetic at all times. The reader is immediately plunged into Dorothy's world, and can see this alien world through a ten-year-old's eyes. Dorothy is an intriguing character, having been smothered by her parents' narrow-mindedness and now becoming restless with this lifestyle. She is searching for romance, for a chance to belong, and a chance to do something worthy with her life. She learns to defy her parents, and Sandi Toksvig, with the wit we have all come to expect, describes this experience beautifully and and keeps your reading until the last page. Buy now!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic fantasy 17 Nov 2002

Format:Paperback
From the first chapter I was hooked. I sped through this book faster than I have ever read anything else. Captured into this fantasticly unbelievable world of a young girl and her weird home life in a new country. Written in her wonderfully witty way Sandi takes you on a mystery tour that captures your imagination. You will find yourself being taken through a variety of emotions.
I have now bought Flying Under Bridges and can't wait to discover the further tallents of this fantasticly clever and funny lady. Quite simply brilliant reading!
