5.0 out of 5 stars cheap as chips/priceless album 16 Feb 2006
By simon
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
i bought whistlers debut album,on the back of owning faith in the morning which is a brilliant album and that it was being flogged on amazon for a bargain price(sorry whistler you won,t be retiring on the royalty cheques from these sales).
the album kicks off with, if i give a smile, whistler have a penchant for simple melodic tunes, and if i give a smile is typical whistler, you will be humming or whistling it for weeks, very catchy, very uplifting.
with songs like dont jump in front of my train and my favourite track pulling the strings, this is a great accoustic album, brilliantly produced
which will be played to death by me for a long time.
if you like your indie/accoustic music chilled buy this album, you will get a bargain and a great album ,at both the same time

4.0 out of 5 stars Whistler 26 May 2008
By Dave
Format:Audio CD
I bought this album on the back of a single track "Rare American Shoes" being on the cover disc of a Mojo magazines and wasn't disappointed at all with each track having its own merit.

Its a melancholy collection of minor key acoustic songs that are instantly listenable although I'm not quite sure where another reviewer has found the "joy and hapiness" dealing with the very negative emotions that all of us probably feel at some point!

"If I Give You A Smile" is almost a talking blues (should I call that a "Talking folk") with a cute melodic line at the end whilst "The end" breaks the acoustic mode with laid back overdrive and feedback added to show the pain and desperation at the end of a relationship.

These are all great songs if you like the genre; full of emotion (and despair?)- just listen to "Natalies' song" and "Please don't love me any more" as fine examples of some raw feelings - probably not a good idea to listen to this if you've just broken up with a partner - unless of course its as some form of catharsis.

There's not a song on here that jumps up as a "Filler", indeed as an album its both consistent, acoustically pretty and extremely worthy of a wider audience.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different but far from bad 5 Sep 2000
By Alex
Format:Audio CD
Firstly don't be put off by the three star score I'm just being subjective to get 5 stars an album needs to be as good as REM's Automatic for the people and this isn't, but then how many are?
Whistler are a rare breed these days and all acoustic band who should be at the very top of the rock indie pile but due to a lack of radio play are left languishing at the bottom.
This is a Truly excelent album with every song having a deep meaning lyrically it's hard to find an equal and with the brilliant combination of instruments as varied as the Viola and the harp being paired with the lead singers haunting voice your set for instant addiction.
THe opening track is a big dissapointment in my opinion better suited as a 'ghost track' but once you've skipped that your into the meat and bones of the album with the gripping don't jump in front of my train followed by song after song of soul serching brilliance. Behind the bright and cheerfull sound is a very deep train of thought with every song tackling major issues.
Why I'm telling you this I'm not quite sure, Listen to the samples and buy the CD I guarentee you won't have heard anything like them before and I also guarentee you'll keep comming back to this Album again and again. Role on the follow up album and a big tour!

4.0 out of 5 stars Whistler, the wistful. 28 Dec 1999
By Maarten - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The lyrics express longing and regret, set against music that's more positive, not quite poppy. The best comparison I can make is with Mazzy Star: Whistler is similar in spirit but less completely dark, and much more likely to stick in your head. I bought this on a lark and have been really happy with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite Brilliant 22 April 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Well, i wasnt expecting much from this CD.... but, this being from an ex EMF member, i took my chance... And i must say i am far from being disappointed. It is a cross between folk and celtic music, with a hint of pop and R&B.... There are some great tunes & melodies, a beautiful lead female voice...
Just buy it !

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss it. 15 July 2004
By S. DALY - Published on Amazon.com

If you're reading this, you're thinking about buying this album. Which means somehow you've heard OF Whistler.. (or Ian Dench or EMF, but whatever).
The melodies on this cd are amazing. The female voice is soft and harmonic. Just go ahead and buy it.
You won't regret it. And while you're at it, pick up their second cd, Faith in the Morning as well. You won't hear anything like this again.
