A little slow at first, the story line definitely picked up as it moved along, with both the character development and action improving until it reached a satisfying conclusion. The story is one where Noah Simmons, killed in a cave by an unseen evil presence, haunts a group of scientists who enter an underground network of caves for a six-month scientific experiment. The group, headed by Ethan Winslow, has Liz Madison on the team among others. To enable both to be on the experiment, Ethan and Liz marry and the story deals with their attraction and, ultimately, love for one another. The evil presence is a good background and is not overplayed at all. Noah is a cowardly ghost, unable to battle the evil until the end, which is a bit tiring after a while. The man is dead already! Ethan wrestles with not wanting to love Liz, and that is ultimately a little wearing, but seems to reach a natural conclusion. Liz has a secret relationship with the experiment's "founder" -- Aaron -- and the reason for their relationship, and the ensuing gossip and jealously on the part of Ethan, is, to me, the weakest part of the story. The end is done in a few pages, the secret is revealed, and I was tempted to say "That's it? You were willing to ruin a relationship with Ethan for that and yet you happily divulge it at the end?" But that is the only real dissatisfaction I had with the story. Overall, an enjoyable read which blended the horror and romance rather well!

5.0 out of 5 stars elicious supernatural romance 22 July 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In the 1864 Arizona Territory, the Pima Indians told Noah Simmons about the gold and silver in Hoyo del Diablo. After he left them, Noah traveled to the deep cavern, anticipating much wealth. Instead of a fortune, a deadly evil pushes him off the precipice into the abyss.

In the present, at Hoyo del Diablo Cavern, a scientific team sets up a Biocave. The group plans to reside for six months in underground isolation in order to conduct experiments in hydroponics. The strange vernacular sprinkled amidst the English language surprises the ghost of Noah. Their equipment is even weirder. However, the biggest stunner of all is seeing Lizzie Madison, whom the specter feels he has known forever and loves. Lizzie will not be allowed to stay with the team during the test. The financial backer insists only married couples will participate inside the cavern. However, Lizzie gets a break when the fiancée of the lead geologist Ethan Winslow breaks off with him. Ethan and Lizzie quickly marry so they both can participate in the experiment. However, all this noise awakens a slumbering malevolent being.

NIGHT WHISPERS is an excellent otherworldly romance that will leave readers with several thrills and many chills. The story line is entertaining as modern day science with a kind, century plus old ghost battles with an unnamable abomination. The cave adds to the aura of evil. The romance is entertaining and even contains a few twists. The three characters that make up the love triangle (Lizzie, Noah, and Ethan) are all warm and intelligent. Readers will switch back and forth between as to whom they want for Lizzie. Karen Sandler provides readers with an unforgettable and enjoyable supernatural romantic intrigue.

2.0 out of 5 stars Started out good but went downhill fast 8 Jun 2000
By BarkLessWagMore - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I love weird books, the weirder the better, I say. But Night Whispers was just a bit too preposterous for even me to buy into. And, it didn't help that the love story was one of those love/hate fests that I so abhor.

Noah Simmons became a ghost when his greed and ignorance led him to his death. He's been trapped within a cave for over a hundred years when botanist Liz enters his quiet little world. Noah falls deeply in love with his "Lizzie" the moment he spies her and spends the rest of the book watching out (and making trouble) for her and the hero. Meddlesome Noah is the only thing that I enjoyed about this book.

Liz is part of a "BioCave" experiment and will be cooped underground for six months. But, in order to participate, she must be married. You see, the millionaire financing the project is a bit of an eccentric and believes that only married couples can make the project a success. Liz doesn't have a spouse or even a significant other (of course!) and since she has spent most of her career preparing for this project she decides to propose to her colleague Ethan even though she despises him. He is cold and arrogant and has basically made her life miserable. And, believe me, his attitude does not improve once they begin to share a bed . . .

I could easily overlook this ridiculous and contrived plot setup if the love story had been enjoyable but, for me, it wasn't. The couple were not sympathetic characters. They spent most of the book ogling each other, ignoring each other or arguing. Both had a serious aversion to "love" because they were brought up by cold parents, the poor babies. They really needed to get over themselves and do some growing up but it did not happen. They also had a foolish, and very annoying, "big misunderstanding" keeping them apart that only served to compound my frustration with the pair of them. All these two really needed to do was sit down, have a decent conversation and all of their relationship woes would have been solved. Instead they duke it out until nearly the last page.

There were other troublesome plot devices and a totally lame "monster" that made this book very difficult to stick with. After enjoying this author's previous book UNFORGETTABLE because it was sexy and a lot of fun and featured two characters who were good friends, NIGHT WHISPERS, with its combative relationship was a huge disappointment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this passionate romance. 10 July 2000
By Brenda - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In 1864 during the Arizona Territory days, a young man disappeared into 'The Hoyo del Diablo Cavern (The Devil's Pit) never to be heard from again. The Indians say the cave is cursed but that didn't stop those who created what is now called the BioCave. A chance to be a member of the BioCave team could drive a person to do just about anything. At least that's what Liz Madison and Ethan Winslow are about to find out. When the team goes underground to live in the BioCave they experience something more frightening than the resident ghost. Nothing puts the chills down my back quicker than hearing my name and not knowing 'its' source. You will hold tight to your book and refuse to put it down until you know what 'it' is. The mixture of romance, ecological science and the paranormal makes for an explosive result.
