Review

"The Telegraph said 'Essential reading'; The Guardian 'Totally convincing... Gripping to the last'; The Times 'breathtaking'; The Daily Telegraph 'a terrific read'; Books for Keeps 'quality etched right through'; The Independent 'one of those rare books that makes you want to put your life on hold for as long as it takes to finish it... Formidably good writing, full of wit and wisdom, from which children will go away encouraged rather than demoralised at the possibilities of the human condition.'"

Product Description

"Whispers in the Graveyard" is a gripping, powerful and haunting story. Solomon is bullied by his teachers and feels let down by his parents: his father drinks too much and his mother has left him. His refuge is in the local kirkyard among ancient graves that lie in the shadow of the rowan tree, the only thing that grows there. Then workmen uproot the tree and as it decays a strange power is unleashed. Solomon hears whispers and first-grader Amy Miller dreams of a strange lady with an alluring song. Solomon finds out the kirkyard was both the site of a witch hunt and the burial place for small pox victims. Did the witch leave a curse for the miller's descendants? Solomon must uncover the mysteries of the past and save Amy.

This novel was brilliantly atmospheric and descriptive which really made the reader feel the fear and apprehension that Solomon (the main character) felt. On one level this story can be enjoyed as an eerie tale into which the author integrates authentic Scottish legends and historical fact. It is also, however, the story of a child coming to terms with himself and who he is through his misunderstood learning difficulty, dyslexia, and the discovery of his father's alcoholism. The conclusion of this story also fits in very well with the overall plot . . . but you'll have to read it to find out! A fantastic book which I would recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre.

Format:Hardcover
This book is not a bad read it can be entertaining but can also be confusing.

The book centres around the main character Solomon who suffers from dyslexia. It follows the story of him, his alcoholic father and the graveyard where Solomon spends his time.

I would say that this is suitable for a reading age of 12-13 and is of the horror genre.

I would praise this book on the fact that it is well written. It highlights the life of a troubled character. If anything it is a bit confusing near the end (hence only 3 stars).

Overall I would recommend this book and it does warrant reading.

The whispers in the graveyard is a powerful and hard hitting novel. That will take you by surprise.
Read about a boy, Sol suffers from dyslexia that is undiagnosed. You read about the high hurdles that Sol will have to jump. His father is a drunk and his mother has left him! The plot unviels many dark secrets that Sol finds out mostly about himself. Many people sacrificed a lot of things for Sol and thereselfs.

The Genre is horror suspense. The suspense that was building, was just let out straight at the end, which was a let down. Because it was building up and there was nothing.

The reason I give it 4 stars is that it has some hard hitting truths about someone but it kinds or relates to some people. But it has some features that doesn't relate to the real world.

The age range would be 14 because it is difficult novel to get into!

This unique book is not something that I would read. Therefore I can only say if you enjoy horror/suspense then buy this book. But if you enjoy down to earth books about reality. Don't!!
