Product Description

Up here, forget everything you thought you knew about the weather. On this mysterious yet enchanting island strange things can happen: omens, magic, restless spirits ploughing the night on their endless quest for peace, the very land and sea can speak to you of secrets, and of their very own character. When you leave, the dull ache of longing will claw in your heart drawing you back. It's a place like no other. The Isle of Arnasay. Three generations of the Waters clan lie at the centre of this powerful tale about what happens when families and communities fall apart. Told through the eyes of Madeline, from twenty years in the future, by which time she has become a successful, Manhattan-dwelling novelist, we are transported on a roller-coaster-like emotional voyage through the Sea Kingdoms of the Hebrides. Steeped in Celtic, Viking, and Pictish cultural heritage, this gripping novel of close-knit family and community dynamics tells how these forces come into play and wreak havoc with the lives of the Hebrides islanders. This tale will have meanings, echoing the harsh realities of island life, for all Gaels, at home and abroad. But its appeal goes much wider than that. You can't choose your family; all too often you can't choose your friends either. Sometimes, you can't tell the difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whispers of Ghosts Review, 14 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Whispers of Ghosts (Paperback)
This is a fascinating tale of what happends when the Hebrides meets the twenty-first Century. I was deeply moved by the depth of characterisation and by the gradualy unfolding storyline. Knowing the Hebrides well, I can say this book reflects accurately and lovingly the islands as well as the characters you will meet when you eventually find yourself out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reviewing Whispers of Ghosts, 7 Dec 2006
By
This review is from: Whispers of Ghosts (Paperback)
This ia a truly haunting story starring a Hebridean family. I have travelled widely in the Hebrides over many years. I have lived and worked among the people of these mysterios islands, and I can say this story reflects well the atmosphere of the islands.
Maddie Og (Young Maddie) is the narrator, and, looking back at her young life on the Isle of Arnasay, she recalls events of one winter at the beginning of the new millenium. She (Maddie Og) describes the life of her siblings and parents who struggle to keep their existence on this wild, often grim, island that geology seems to have dropped in the middle of the Sea of the Hebrides. Life on the western fringes of the great Atlantic Ocean is never easy.
The author has an interesting literary style which is often poetic, lyrical even, and which holds the reader's attention from page one right to the exciting and unexpected end.
