Product Description

Product Description

Have you ever woken in the middle of the night and thought that your bedroom was a little smaller than when you went to sleep? That the air tasted different? That you house was just that little bit darker? You ever hold someone and know they weren't the person you held yesterday? It's true, all of it.

I hear whispers, sometimes. Bits of another world breaking through. You think these walls will protect you?

None of us are safe. And what I did... I had to do it. You believe me, don't you?

- - -

Whispers is a short piece of claustrophobic horror in the style of King and Philip K Dick. 1700 words.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strange little tale... 17 Feb 2012

Where to fit this short story? It is the sort that makes you scrunch your face and raise your brows while trying to figure out if the main character is a banana crate short of a stowaway tarantula. Is it him or his surroundings, is it real or a hallucination or is it just her? You will probably have to read it yourself to figure that part out.

This is a good short read for readers interested in eerie science fiction tales. Very well-written tale that keeps you wondering what the deal is.
5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet little bonbon of claustrophobic fiction 6 Dec 2011

Hayes-Kossmann's "Whispers" is a good little tale to read yourself before bed. This isn't about fleshed out characters or dense plotting. . . it's a story to read for pure atmosphere. It's psychological (and perhaps supernatural?) horror in the tradition of Poe, Kafka, Lovecraft, Mark Z. Danielewski ("House of Leaves"), and as the description mentions, King and Dick.

That said, this isn't an amateur-hour angsty teen writer trying to sound like Stephen King. Hayes-Kossman as talent, and some of his turns of phrase are worth the 99 cents alone--he can craft an insightful simile without seeming too precious.

Bottom line: 99 cents gets you a sample scoop of fiction written by an indie publisher who can reallytrulyactually write. Take a taste!
