Next to Randolph Scott, Audie Murphy is my favourite star of westerns. Small of stature with a handsome baby face, he seemed eternally youthful until his tragic death in a plane crash in 1971 when he was only about three weeks away from his forty-seventh birhday. A hero of WW2, he starred in a great many successful westerns as well as playing himself in the movie 'To Hell And Back' ( 1955 ), which was essentially about his war exploits.
'Whispering Smith' was released in 1961 and lasted for 25 episodes. Audie plays a railroad detective operating in Denver, Colorado, and Guy Mitchell plays his partner. There were numerous guest stars including Robert Lowery, Forrest Tucker, Robert Redford and Alan Hale Jr. The series was not terribly successful and Audie, a little disenchanted with television, went back to making movies for the big screen.
Compared to his western movies, this TV series seems a little pedestrian, but then the episodes are only around 25 minutes long and I have to say the sound is a little muffled on these dvds, which doesn't help.
Still a must if you're an Audie Murphy fan and a chance to see a long-forgotten series.
