During the Second World War, when the British were mostly reliant on US civil aircraft types for air transport, the British Government set up the Brabazon Committee to consider the post-war requirements of British civil aviation. In 1943 the Committee suggested that various different types of aircraft should be developed, one of which, termed the Brabazon III, was to become the first western long-range turbo-prop airliner, the Bristol Britannia. This book examines in detail the history of one of the most important civil aircraft designs to emerge from the ashes of Second World War. This volume is the third in the Aircraft of Distinction series of trend setting books describing major civil aircraft types of the 20th century. All variants of the aircraft are described in detail beginning with the Series 100 & 102, through to the final variant, the series 320. Derivatives CL28 Argus, CL44 Yukon and Shorts Belfast are comprehensively described and the book contains a close-up detail section for help in modelling the aircraft. A 'variations on a theme' section displays a selection of three view drawings of the aircraft and the book is complimented by a newly researched production list, bibliography, glossary & abbreviations and index. The book contains 36 specially commissioned full-colour side-view drawings and is complimented by 232 full-colour and 12 black & white photographs reproduced to the highest standard, printed on fine quality art paper.

Great book on a classic British airliner,

Please don't be put off by the negative review of this book. The Britannia was quite an advanced aircraft for its time and Bristol took a few risks with such an innovative approach. This resulted in delivery delays that caused the airliner to have a relatively short life in BOAC and the other original customers as the jet age arrived. It went on to have a second career with the charter airlines such as the eponymous Britannia Airways. The aircraft itself was very comfortable to fly in as I recall from my childhood. The book is superbly produced with the very highest quality artwork and photographs, and is worth every penny. The same series also produced books on the Comet and VC10, both equally well produced, and also highly recommended.

If you are a fan of the Airliners of the 60's.You will love this book.
A very detailed and interesting book. All you want to know about the Britannia. I loved it.

Excellent presentation with lots of good pictures. All aspects of development, production and use with first owners and then on to later owners being well covered.
Whilst the history of the aircraft was well documented and that of some of the work they did, I would have thought that that operational and technical aspects would have received more coverage. After all, the aircraft was, through out its life a technical challenge in the electrical and engine department and there exists a fund of stories covering these aspects and the consequent operational dramas.
