When they're not eating or sleeping, they're fighting, and that's just how The Whisperer likes it. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Kids Book, 26 Jun 2006

This is a brave picture book for children touching on the themes of segregation and racism. It's fantastically written from a rat's point of view. The rat observes the tensions between two rival gangs of cats (One gang black and white, the other ginger). A pair of star-crossed lovers force a truce between the two gangs and the lovers are disowned by both families.
This is a great read for kids of all ages and a great way of opening up debate about complex issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars West side story for children starring black and ginger cats with striking illustations, 28 Oct 2007

(VINE VOICE)    (TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Whisperer (Hardcover)
This story is narrated by a rat, who is pleased that two different coloured cat gangs are fighting each other because it distracts them from rat catching. Then a ginger cat and a black Tom fall in love. Their families are appalled and they are banished. However, when they return they have a family. What now? This book is a striking combination of bad cats and a rubbish dump setting with pictures in Butterworth's fresh-faced appealing style, black pages with contrasting clean white writing, that doesn't feel the least bit threatening. It's a very good story in its own right with an ending, a stripy kitten named Tiger, that my children love and find funny. It is a bonus that the book can be used to lead on to discussions about external differences, prejudice and so on. Another good book that also illustrates this message well, if you're a fan of the zany Dr Seuss, is The Sneetches.

Children's books are becoming more beautiful and sophisticated as time goes on, and this one is no exception. The illustrations are simply gorgeous and the story is extremely well told. Children will fall in love with the characters and it will lead in to easy discussion about racism and prejudice.
