Product Description

Classic Ealing comedy. During the Second World War, the inhabitants of a small Hebridean island are wilting under a chronic shortage of whisky. When a ship is wrecked on the shore, it is discovered to contain 50,000 cases of malt, which are promptly appropriated by the menfolk of the island. All is well until an English Home Guard commander - determined to see the whisky restored to its rightful owners - calls in Her Majesty's Customs, and the islanders make frantic attempts to hide their treasured alcoholic booty!

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic. 10 May 2007
By L. Hay VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Sir Compton McKenzie got the inspiration for his book from a real life event.

This is a film I have seen many times and I have read the book. It was lovely to get the DVD and see the extras. It had to be retitled for the American anti-alcohol lobby and the ending had to be altered to show that the Islanders gained no benefit from stealing all that Whisky.

I seem to recall that the times I have watched it before, the ending was different, or perhaps I am confusing it with the book.

The upshot is that the Islanders did not suffer in the slightest from secreting "the water of life" and everyone lived happily ever after.

As a matter of interest, Whisky was rationed and scarce in the UK during the war, yet boatloads were exported to the USA.

WATCH THE FILM - AND - READ THE BOOK!!!!

You will not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Scottish comedy 21 Aug 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Whisky Galore is one of these timeless films; well-acted (perfect west-Highland accents) and with a storyline based upon an actual Hebridean event - a cargo ship runs aground on rocks near one of the outer Hebrides islands and its cargo is thousands of boxes of whisky. The islanders, who have no whisky on their island because of war-time rationing, want to remove some of the whisky at night but are frustrated initially because it is Sunday and have to spend an entire day wondering if the boat will sink before they can remove some of the cargo. Eventually they succeed and a hilarious scene follows where the Customs men try to find where the whisky is located. A classic film and as funny today as it was when it was first filmed.
