Biography

The world first got an eyeful of Idol - known to his parents as William Broad - when he was one of the “Bromley Contingent,” an assortment of nascent punks whose presence at the live shows of the then-unknown Sex Pistols was not unlike the Warhol Factory denizens who enlivened Velvet Underground performances, or the troupe of dancers led by sculptor Vito Paulekas who made magic in the audience at… Read more in Amazon's Billy Idol Store

Idolise This 27 May 2007
By Mr. L. C. Button VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Billy Idol's snarling vocals combined with Steve Stevens guitar wizardry created one of the most distinctive sounds of the eighties. This particular CD must be Billy Idol's greatest achievement. There are ten tracks and every one has a certain quality. The Steve Stevens guitar solo in "Don't Need a Gun" is legendary and everyone remembers the catchy lyrics of "To Be a Lover". The only let down is the lethargic "One Night, One Chance". My own favourite is "Man For All Seasons". If I had to compile a soundtrack to my life, this track would be on it.

1986 is along time ago but fans of Billy Idol really should own this. For younger listeners discovering the sounds of the eighties for the first time this disc is highly recommended.

Whiplash Smile is infused with the spirit of Elvis Presley, best demonstrated by the delectable "To Be A Lover" with its moody riff, rousing buildup, girl chorus and addictive melody and "Sweet Sixteen", a lovely lilting ballad that recalls those dreamy pop songs from the sixties. None of the other tracks quite lives up to these two gems, but there's merit in the rocking "World's Forgotten Boy" and "Don't Need a Gun" with its great guitar work and swirling synths, which also namechecks Elvis, Johnny Ray and Gene Vincent amongst others. As a tribute to the King, this is an excellent piece of 80s poprock which has aged well.

Something missing 16 Dec 2005
Format:Audio CD
This album is brilliant............but some soul missing. Maybe its the programmed drums, I don't know.
Steve Stevens guitar work is, as ever, brilliant. The opening of 'Worlds Forgotten Boy' gives us a taste of whats to come, but 'Soul Standing By' is where Steve REALLY lets go. Nifty work on other tracks and Billy is on fine form with the lyrics and singing. The production is faultless, even if Billy was scathing about Forsey years later. Forget Cyberpunk (Billys other techno work) and check this out. Steve went on to Atomic Playboys after this as he felt the soul was missing from this album. Listen to Atomic Playboys and just think what could have been
