If you don't mind a heavy dose of schmaltz and sentiment, this romantic comedy has a gentle way of seducing you with its charms. While You Were Sleeping was the first starring role for Sandra Bullock after her blockbuster success in Speed. In a role that nicely emphasises her easygoing appeal, Bullock is the reason the movie works at all. She plays Lucy Eleanor Moderatz, a Chicago Transit tollbooth clerk who's hopelessly smitten with a daily commuter, Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher). She saves the object of her affection from certain death after he's mugged and falls onto the train tracks. While Peter is in a coma, she lets his family believe that she is his fiancée, and surprisingly finds herself drawn to his brother (Bill Pullman), for whom the attraction is definitely mutual. How Lucy gets out of this amorous predicament is what makes this pleasant movie less predictable than its familiar ingredients would initially indicate. It's feel-good fluff, with characters and performances that keep you smiling through the drippy plot mechanics. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Film 22 Mar 2003
This is exactly the type of film that you can watch again and again - especially if you're a romantic. It's warm, funny and brilliantly acted. When Sandra Bullock see's the man she 'wants to marry' get mugged and pushed onto a rail track she saves him and after a mistake at the hospital (a nurse overhears Bullock talking to herself), his family turn up to find him in a coma and being told she's his fiancee.
From then on, circumstances (often comical) happen that means Bullock has to go along with the ruse. Then she meets her 'ideal' man's brother and falls in love with him.
Bullock's character is lovely and you really feel for her when she explains always she carries her passport around with her because she's going to Italy someday.
Bill Pullman as the brother she falls for is also very good. You can almost see the internal struggle he's fighting not to show that he has feelings for his brother's 'girl'. One of the best moments is when he plays cards with his comatose brother and says that the highest card gets Bullock - when it goes against him he then decides it's best of three, very sweet!
You always know it's going to turn out alright in the end but it's such fun getting there.
Good for a girls night in with lots of popcorn and chocolate - the perfect evening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mmmmm... :) 1 April 2003
Format:VHS Tape
My favourite film of all time! After seeing it over 40 times now, it still hasn't lost its sparkle! Some films just manage to tap right into your soul, and this is one of them. There's honestly something for everyone in this film, all ages, male or female. If you're having a really rotten day/week/year, it'll cheer you up no end and it's a great way to escape from the crap life throws at you.
Sandra Bullock is hilarious as Lucy, but you've GOT to see Bill Pullman (plays Jack) in it. He's so unbelievably sexy in this film - makes you wanna melt! The chemistry between Bill and Sandy really draws you into the film, it's not one of those superficial types. And the situations that all the characters get into makes you laugh and cringe at the same time, especially when you realise that you've been in similar situations yourself!
So arm yourself with a duvet and a big box of chocolates, and go watch the best film ever! (just don't blame me if you fall in love with Bill!)

5.0 out of 5 stars While You Were Sleeping 13 Dec 2004
The first time i saw this film was at christmas time and since the film is set at christmas time also i found it most appropiate. This is definately one of my favourite films of all time. You can watch this film over and over. Both Bullock and Pullman's characters are beleivable and loveable. Everyone will find they relate to at least one chracter even if its commical Saul played by Jack Warden. Sandra really comes through in the main female role of Lucy Moderatz and by the end of the film i can gaurentee a tear.
This film gets 8/10 from me and at christmas time 9/10!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars one you can watch over & over 17 Feb 2007
I saw this film in the cinema back in 1995 and quickly established itself as a family favourite.

This film does not disappoint and still brings a smile to my face even after more than ten years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kitty… rich kitty 21 Aug 2003
This is one of those movies that can be watched over and again. First time you anticipate what is going to happen. Second time you see where they are setting you up. After a while you can imagine the seen from the sound. Back to the movie.
There is a nice story line and it is just in the believable. However it is the many small scenes that make you relay enjoy watching. When Lucy (Sandra Bullock) is confronted in Peter's apartment, Jack his brother is already suspicious of her. Peter's real girlfriend Ashley left her cat there. Lucy says she is just there to feed the cat, Jack smugly says that Peter has no cat. About that time what should come around the corner but the cat. Every time Jack thinks he has the upper hand, Lucy has a plausible explanation. I do not want to say too much, as it is fun to watch for the first time. However I think you will be able to relate the scene where the family is talking in the church.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Mary Mashed Them". Soft viewing with longevity 18 Dec 2004
By A Customer
Listen out for the above line in the dinner scene: the mother says it off camera and I guarantee you will split your sides.
This syrupy movie is redeemed by the strong supporting cast, particularly the father, grandma and the coma guy. Bill Pullman deserves more work (and better) and more attention than he gets and Ms Bullock succeeds by her very ordinariness. This film makes ideal holiday viewing. Get this and a copy of The Bishop's Wife (David Niven, Cary Grant) and settle in for Christmas.
