Book Description

Oct 2013
On September 15, 1963, a Klan-planted bomb went off in the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Fourteen-year-old Carolyn Maull was just a few feet away when the bomb exploded, killing four of her friends in the girl’s restroom she had just exited. It was one of the seminal moments in the Civil Rights movement, a sad day in American history . . . and the turning point in a young girl’s life.

While the World Watched is a poignant and gripping eyewitness account of life in the Jim Crow South: from the bombings, riots, and assassinations to the historic marches and triumphs that characterized the Civil Rights movement.

A uniquely moving exploration of how racial relations have evolved over the past 5 decades, While the World Watched is an incredible testament to how far we’ve come and how far we have yet to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real people real stories real courage 2 Dec 2012

This book encompasses a huge slice of American history but parecels it together to be seen through the eyes of a 'normal' and real person... a young girl. The story could be accused of jumping backwards and forwards in history but any real life and honestly told story gathers threads from times and dates that don't sit next to each other on a calendar page. I loved the speeches by Martin Luther King Jr and found the funeral dedication to 3 of the 4 girls as uplifting as any of his more widely reported and well known speeches. Thank you to the author for telling a story that can still have an impact today. We still live in a world where the same hatred exists (though it may have changed its form)but we still live in a world where the same love also exists and this book has helped remind me how the latter can and will endure.

I had tunnel vision to segregation before reading this. Amazing first hand account of what went in Birmingham. This has now edged it's way to the top of my favorite books list and I recommend it to all my reader friends. This lady is an inspiration.
