Review

a clever, fun little novel. . . If you're a sucker for plucky women who rise to the occasion, this is for you. . . You might even be tempted to move in. Edward would arrange everything. Of course (USA TODAY)

Just wonderful. The characters were real, believable, and not without their own flaws. The Downton Abbey theme was definitely the invisible thread that tightened the story into a well-written, enjoyable novel. (Chic Lit Central Blog)

Blimey, our little show has even conqered the book world!...Cosy and cute. (Star Magazine)

More About the Author

Wendy Wax, freely admits to her Downton Abbey addiction and the role it's played in the creation of her latest novel, WHILE WE WERE WATCHING DOWNTON ABBEY. As Season 2 ended, she found herself thinking about characters who were also fans of the show. "That was all well and good," she says, "but I didn't have a book for them-at least not until I let Downton Abbey itself bring them together." She adds that once she saw how the show might actually help change their lives, the story "came alive."

The novel takes place at the Alexander, a historic Atlanta apartment building whose British concierge invites residents to weekly screenings of Downton Abbey. That's how Samantha, Claire, Brooke and Edward, who have little else in common, forge bonds that sustain them through some of life's hardest moments--all of it reflected in the unfolding drama, humor, and lives of Downton Abbey. Wendy's writing, including her recent books Ocean Beach and Ten Beach Road, has been highly praised. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says she "writes with breezy wit and keen insight into family relations." Her books have been featured in national publications such as USA Today and Woman's World, and at online book blogs and sites such as

On A Clear Day You Can Read Forever, Luxury Reading, Night Owl Reviews and Fresh Fiction. In 2011 she was honored by the City of St. Pete Beach, where she was born and raised, when the City Commission declared May 12 "Wendy Wax Day."

The mother of a toddler and an infant when she decided to change careers, Wendy admits it may not have been the best timing in terms of productivity. "I'm still not certain why I felt so compelled to write my first novel at that particular time," she says, "but that first book took forever." Since then she's written eight others, including Magnolia Wednesdays, the Romance Writers of America RITA Award finalist The Accidental Bestseller, Leave It to Cleavage and Single in Suburbia. Her novel 7 Days and 7 Nights was honored with the Virginia Romance Writers Holt Medallion Award. Her work has been sold to publishers in fifteen countries and to the Rhapsody Book Club, and her novel, Hostile Makeover, was excerpted in Cosmopolitan magazine.

Wendy is currently at work on her next novel, which takes characters introduced in Ten Beach Road (St. Pete Beach) and Ocean Beach (Miami) and sets them loose in Key West. Her first e-original, a holiday novella, Christmas at the Beach, also reunites those protagonists and will be published in the fall.

When not writing, she spends much of her time speaking to writer's groups and book clubs, enjoying time with her family, visiting relatives in St. Pete, and devouring books. She lives in Atlanta.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shandy aside, a really good read! 8 Sep 2013

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a read that I really enjoyed. It is set in The Alexander, an apartment building in Atlanta and revolves around three women who live there, all from diverse backgrounds, who get to know each other when their Concierge arranges weekly screenings of Downton Abbey.

I have only ever seen Downton Abbey a few times but it is not necessary to have watched it to understand this book, although it does really make me want to sit down and watch every season now. I really enjoyed getting to know Brooke, Claire and Samantha and reading about how they start to bond and form real friendships throughout the screenings. They all have their own problems to deal with and, even though they become very close, it does take quite a while in the book for them to open up to each other about their deepest feelings and problems.

It is a nice, warm, cosy read that you can get lost in and as I said, I really enjoyed it. However, as is often the case, one really stupid error made me quite cross and blighted the whole read for me.

Each screening is accompanied by typically English nibbles - trifles, sausage and mash, scones etc. On one evening they are served Shandy, and over the course of a couple of hours Claire drinks so much Shandy that she is blind drunk and has to be taken home and put to bed. As anyone over this side of the pond knows, it is impossible to get drunk on Shandy because of the sheer volume needed. It is after all the drink we give to teenagers who want to appear grown up. The incident was then referred to quite a few times later on in the book, and it really did niggle me.

That having been said, it is a hugely enjoyable read that is well paced, although the last couple of chapters which rounded everything off did feel a little rushed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book about friendship 6 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First book I've read by this author I was swayed to read it by the title being a fan of Downton Abbey. The story is based around an apartment block in the states were the new concierge is an Englishman and he is trying to encourage the tenants to get a more community spirit. He decides to show screenings of Downton Abbey in the entertainment room and hopes that this will bring the tenants together and new friendships made. Lovely story of friendship and love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book, well recommended. 2 July 2014

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't help but think what a fabulous film it would make. Great writing, haven't read any by this author before but will look out for more, really loved the characters and was very sad when I came to the end of the book. As a Downton fan this was right up my street but you don't have to know anything about Downton to enjoy it.
