Where's Asterix joins Where's Bin Laden?, Where's Elvis? and the growing number of Where's Wally (Waldo in North America) parodies. I loved the Asterix comics as a kid so when I saw this one, just had to check it out. Many adults check out the Asterix comics (now called graphic novels) from the libraries where I work so I think this would make a great present for people of any age. The 2010 character illustrations are well drawn, staying very loyal to the ones in the long dead Rene Goscinny's original books. Of course Asterix replaces Wally/Waldo as the main character to be found on each page, he's pretty easy to find in some and very hard in a few. There were two that I couldn't find him, there's an answer page on and next to the back cover. Found all the other characters though pretty easy. On each double page spread you will be asked to find between four and seven different characters. There's a few set in the Gaulish Village where you'll get to see all the characters and can even challenge others to find the ones the book is not asking you to. There's another set in a roman town, a fair with an arena, storming a roman fort, in a roman court, out at sea, in a Roman festival, inside a legion of soldiers and shields, in Egypt where Caesar's palace is being built, and on a rugby field. So the book brings back a lot of memories of Asterix adventures read as a child (or adult).
You do have to know who one or two characters are (ie what they look like) for a few of the challenges, which means you have to have some memory of them from the comics. There are a number of characters listed in the front but not all of the ones you are challenged to find. I also think they could have had a few more characters listed to find to add to the challenge since they are present in the images. Still overall it's a fun way to pass an hour or two or reminisce about comics you read long ago.
