Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and the former West Midlands County are collectively known as the West Midlands. This is a region of contrasts: from the bleak moors of Peak District to the mellow hills of the Cotswolds; or from the wooded hillsides and streams of the Welsh border country to the lush valleys of the Avon. Within its rich mosaic of habitats can be found a combination of northern species such as Twite and Black Grouse and southern ones such as Nightingale; western ones like the Pied Flycatcher and the eastern Red-legged Partridge. Black Redstarts maintain a tenuous presence in the hub of Birmingham and the Marsh Warbler can still be found in Worcestershire. This third edition has been extensively revised and updated, with several new sites added and some existing site accounts considerably expanded. I've lived in the West Midlands all my life, and there's sites in here I had not heard of. Covers a much wider area than just the West Midlands. OK, it doesn't have them all in, but I think there's enough to satisfy most peoples interest for a number of years. Loads of species info, and a run-down of what to see at different times of the year. Highly recommended.

I bought this as a present for a friend who is new to birdwatching. I have several in the series which I bought for myself many years ago. I was pleased to see it is being updated. It is very comprehensive and gives good ideas for days out.

I had a copy of the earlier edition of this book decades ago. I am so glad to have this new edition - like meeting an old friend after losing touch. This book has so much to offer as it moves from county to county helping you discover places to go and watch birds. A great idea is the info given about what the watcher might see each season. This is an essential book for any bird watcher who lives or visits the West Midlands. Make sure you get a copy and keep it in the glove box. This is one of a series of guides covering much of the UK. Check out the one for your home area.
