Book Description

30 Jun 2000 Where to Watch Birds
Over 250 major sites are treated in this book, and many more in passing from Iceland across Europe through Georgia to Ussuriland in southeast Russia. Countries, archipelagos and islands are treated alphabetically, the introduction to each being accompanied by a map showing major routes and the distribution of sites. Each site account lists the birds to be seen and how and where to find them, particularly the specialities, and there is also information on other wildlife and tips on finding accommodation. There is a general introduction to the region, a list of useful addresses to aid in planning and researching a trip as well as a site index and, most importantly, a species index which will enable readers to pinpoint the birds they most want to see.

4.0 out of 5 stars Birds in France 4 Oct 2013
By richard
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I found the directions not to be spot on, that could have been me.
It did however get me in to the general area of where I wanted to be.
It made my recent trip to France more rewarding.
I am glad I made the purchased.

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent but not concise guide to birding Europe 31 July 2008
By P. Reese - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This has information on quite a few birding sites in Europe but it just touches the highlights. It is a beginning and books of this nature are difficult to get ones hands on. I used it for Estonia. There was actually more information on the internet than in the book. It lacks specific directions on how to get to the sites for example. We had a very difficult time finding several of them. We actually spent 2 days finding one site.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Highlights of Birding Europe and Asia 3 Nov 2008
By Brian Allen - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you want one book to give you the highlights of birding all the countries of Europe and Russia this is an excellent guide. There are of course well written books with much greater depth of material on for example the great birding spots of Spain or Great Britain. This book is more for those that wonder "Where could I go birding in Denmark or possibly Norway if I get the chance someday. Are there good birding sites in Slovakia or Slovenia?"

From Iceland to Italy or Corsica to Finland this book provides a good overview on birds present, endemic species, sites to bird and information on safety, lodging and logistics.

I would recommend this book to research all the possibilities and then when you decide on a specific country or countries to visit get the more in depth books and check the internet for updates.
4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Concise Overview of Where to Watch Birds in Europe 21 July 2013
By J. Moore - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm not aware of any other recent single volume that gives such a broad overview of the birdwatching potential of all the European countries. As others have said, you should do additional research on specific locations if you're going to be guiding yourself in a particular country (especially since the book is over a decade old now). A book dedicated to the whole of Europe and Russia obviously cannot contain all the information that a single book dedicated to a single country could. But on the other hand, single country guides cannot give you the big picture of birding in Europe that this guide can. And in many cases there are no single country guides for many of the nations covered.

The Wheatley guides (there is one covering almost every corner of the globe) are particularly good for finding out what birds are special to particular countries, and evaluating which countries in a region are best for birding. So it's great for planning a multi-country trip and/or deciding where to go. It's also ideal if you want a nice summary of the best birding sites in a single country.
