Book Description

Bestselling author Jodi Picoult is 'a master of her craft' (Daily Telegraph) who writes 'elegant, spare prose with the punch of a populist thriller' (Elle). In this original short story, available exclusively as an eBook, Picoult introduces Serenity Jones, one of the fascinating characters from her eagerly awaited new novel, Leaving Time.

Even as a child, Serenity Jones knew she possessed unusual psychic gifts. Now, decades later, she's an acclaimed medium and host of her own widely viewed TV show, where she delivers messages to the living from loved ones who have died. Lately, though, her efforts to boost ratings and garner fame have compromised her clairvoyant instincts.

When Serenity books a young war widow to appear as a guest, the episode quickly unravels, stirring up a troubling controversy. And as she tries to undo the damage - to both her reputation and her show - Serenity finds that pride comes at a high price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very cleverly done teaser of a new book. 25 Aug. 2014

Very cleverly done teaser of a new book, “Serenity” – a short story that grabbed me from the first [digital] page and ignited my interest. I will definitely read the new book by Jodi Picoult, who manages to introduce a number (or just one) of characters of her forthcoming novel in this tiny mystery, which I managed to finish within half an hour. Short, eloquent and entertaining – ideal for a short commute!

4.0 out of 5 stars A short page-turner from a master storyteller 24 Oct. 2014

Serenity, a TV psychic is haunted by a ghost after one of her shows, where a soldier killed in Iraq reveals he was killed by his commanding officer. The resulting furore threatens Serenity 's popularity so she devices a plan to find the missing son of a Senator, but can she deliver?

I love books by Jodi Picoult and have very rarely been disappointed by a book from her, which is why I was happy to read this short story. As a rule short stories aren't my thing, but Picoult develops plot, character and interest in this story feverishly well and when the story ends you definitely want to know what happens next to Serenity and her show.

A short page-turner from a master storyteller, with just over an hours reading time this will definitely enthral and I don't often say that about short stories.

Thirty minutes well spent reading this short story. As usual Jodi delivers a very good read. Have to now wait until the end of the year to read more about Serenity.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love Jodi Picoult 28 Mar. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a huge fan of Jodi Picoult I was excited to start reading her short story Where There’s Smoke. Well, excited and a little apprehensive. You see, my favourite aspect of Pioult’s work is how she manages to change your mind throughout her stories. You go in with one solid unchangeable belief and before you know it you are siding with the antagonist. I worried how she would be able to portray this same quality in so few pages.

Fortunately, Where There’s Smoke is unlike other works by Picoult in that you do not come across this dilemma. Picoult gives you a brief insight into the world of television psychics and how their powers can be seen as both good and bad.

In her inimitable style, Picoult draws you in straight away and has you hooked and completely immersed in the world that she has created which is why she is one of the greatest writers of our time.

I cannot wait to read Leaving Time.

Where There’s Smoke by Jodi Picoult is available now.

4.0 out of 5 stars We're Materialists in a Spiritual World 4 Jun. 2014

One of the really interesting effects of e-publishing is that it is now possible to publish works that are far shorter or far longer than the traditional novel. Freed from the constraints of paper, distribution and shelf space, it is possible to price works in a more adventurous way. In this case, Jodi Picoult's short story is actually distributed without any charge at all. It features a character in a forthcoming novel - perhaps Where There's Smoke is a taster, perhaps it is promotional material or perhaps it is a great piece of writing that just didn't fit into the novel. Who can say?

But this is very much the reader's gain. Jodi Picoult's covers alone would tend to put me off. But a short read (perhaps 40 minutes) and a tale of a TV psychic were enough to draw me in. The psychic - pink haired Serenity Jones - is a narcissist, obsessed with her talent, her ratings and her prospects of getting an Emmy. She has a pride in her work, but only because she believes this is what makes her better than anyone else. She has not the first concern for her clients or her spirits.

Despite the lack of wordage, Picoult manages to create a very solid world with authentic smell of greasepaint, warm glow of studio lights, weird people in Hollywood and more than a passing fascination into America's somewhat overblown sense of patriotism. It's a story of its time: decadent, gaudy and entirely materialistic. It's kind of the reverse of the Police song: We're Materialists in Spiritual World. I would happily sign up for the main course (Leaving Time) when it's released. If that was Jodi Picoult's aim in sharing this delightful story, she has truly succeeded.

2.0 out of 5 stars Where there's smoke 1 Aug. 2014

A short story... I was expecting so much more. I normally like the books written by this author and I have read so many of her books. This short was just that short, not much of anything really. I does not make me want to read any more of this themed book, it is as though the author is trying to take us down another route of storytelling which quite frankly is not up to the usual standard of work and not what I expect from this author...disappointing read really.

Jodi Picoult novels always appeal to me as they have the promise of a fantastic read and this is always the case until you get near the end of the book then they feel rushed with the need for a quick ending to an otherwise fab story. This is always disappointing.

I thought I would give this ebook a chance to see if the story would flow with a better more polished ending without it feeling rushed, but this ebook just seemed to end without any conclusion.

I am confused me is it a taster of a book yet to be released or is that it?
Again the promise of a really good story which I felt was unfinished.

3.0 out of 5 stars Trailer for Book Release 23 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Read this on a 40 minute journey home and at the end was left thinking and?? It is a light and frothy read and I found myself not liking the psychic for her need for fame or the ending which left me wondering are you just going to live a life of burning items due to an angry spirit? Once at the end realised from an advert at the end that this book is intended as a teaser for a new book release following the characters tale. But for me whilst I loved the premise, the character did not sufficiently endear me to care about what happens next so I wont be buying the next instalment.
