Product Description

Product Description

With 3 million copies in print in over 50 languages, Where There Is No Doctor is the most widely used health care manual in use in developing countries today. Using simple language and hundreds of drawings, the book provides information about recognising, treating and preventing common illnesses and injuries. But it is far more than simple first aid information. It covers a wide range of subjects that affect the health of the villager - from diarrhoea to tuberculosis, from helpful and harmful home remedies to the cautious use of certain modern medicines. Special importance is placed on cleanliness, a healthy diet, vaccination, childbirth and family planning. The African edition covers diseases commonly found in Africa. This revised edition includes additional information on HIV and AIDS, dengue, complications from abortion and drug addiction.

This is a bpook I have owned since 1993 and have just purchased this latest edition. I have used this in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. I have other books on my laptop, this one goes as hard copy! My wife and I will not travel to Africa without it.

If You are going to Africa or other underdeveloped places to work this is a most valueable source of information. My daughter, working in Mozambique uses it all the time. A very good buy!!

This publication is such a good one that demonstrates how traditional African healing practices are considered to be of no use. The title presumes there are no doctors but there are traditional doctors with specialised knowledge of diseases and have been very effective in treating man diseases.

Anyone reading this book should enjoy the information contained in it but should keep in mind, the peoples medicine exists and has to be promoted to. Environmental diseases became much more widespread with the rapid advances in urbanisation, modernisation and globalisation. Natural settings would be able to take care of their preys should their conditions remained thesame. Africa has tradtional midwives, healers and sootsayers that perform thesame duties as does modern doctors. Lets respect their efforts and pharmaceutical companies should avoid their dubious efforts to bribe developing country governments to kill traditional healing practices by preventing traditional from harvesting medicinal plants from forests.

I rate this book 5 stars because the information is comprehensive and has satisfied the desires of many western researchers in Africa who are blind to local realities
