Book Description

Having hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2001, Nancy Shepherd was no stranger to long-distance backpacking. Yet, when she set out to hike the International Appalachian Trail in 2003, she had a backpack full of concerns, from questions about the terrain itself, crossing the border, and the language barrier in a different country to worries over hiking with someone she'd met briefly only once before.

In 2003, the International Appalachian Trail was relatively new, and extended about 700 miles from Maine to Cap Gaspe in Quebec. Much of the length was still on roads, and lacked printed maps. Shepherd and her partner set out on faith, trusting that they could handle whatever issues they encountered -- the first of which occurred on the very first day.

While the hike was not everything she'd hoped for, the beauty of the wilderness and the joy of being on the trail outweighed the struggles and frustrations. Along the way Shepherd learned the importance of self-reliance and of choosing a compatible partner. She learned that sometimes adjustments are necessary, and realized that without those compromises, she may have missed the opportunity for the most important lesson of all.

"This is a story of going beyond the comfort zone, of realizing limits, and of lessons learned, as well as a story that will reaffirm your faith in humanity."

If you enjoy adventure stories that go beyond sunshine and butterflies to tell it like it really is, Where The Mountains Meet The Sea is for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting - but not a tale for me 26 Aug. 2013

I wanted to read the book as I'm interested in the AIR but the book wasn't written in a style I personally like. I found the fact that the writer hitched so many lifts annoying. I wasn't interested in what I viewed as continual moaning about what was an adventure at the end of a day. I would have liked to read a more positive account and will in the future. I agree with the writer in that we all hike in a way that we are happy with. I respect the writer for putting their head above the parapet whilst others (like me) haven't.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected 20 Nov. 2012

Too much about physical problems encountered. At times it seems almost like whining.
Needs to have the book "tightened" to include more of what the trail is really like.
2.0 out of 5 stars Keep going into Canada 17 May 2014

A story that takes the appalachain trail clear into Canada. However the story just peters out and becomes disengaging. There is not much substance and i wouldn't blame you for putting it down.
4.0 out of 5 stars You Have to Have Hiked a Long Distance Trail... 17 July 2013

to appreciate what Ms. Shepherd went through during her trek of the IAT. Having section hiked about 90% of the AT, I can relate to the blisters, the wet clothes, the tiredness and the lack of desire to continue. However, it is usually other hikers that encourage you to go on. And it is when you are in sight of your goal, in this case the eastern (or northern) terminus of the IAT, it's the adrenaline that keeps you going. I enjoyed reading this book. I only have 330 miles left to complete the AT. This book made me want to go back there tomorrow and complete it. Unfortunately, I still have to work so I will have to 'steal' time to reach my goal.
3.0 out of 5 stars Boring 10 May 2013

Really short, kinda dry. Hard to read, not like her other book. Perhaps the Appalachian trail is better to write about.

This author spends so much time complaining I have to wonder why she goes out backpacking at all. She makes me not want to go out.
