Roger Kynard 'Roky' Erickson was the mercurial frontman of the 60s psychedelic pioneer band 13th Floor Elevators, whose career was intended to be a demonstration of the consciousness-expanding possibilities of drugs but proved just the opposite.
Like Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett (also christened Roger), Erickson had his brain fried (as did bandmate and LSD guru Tommy Hall). Unlike Barrett, Erickson had enough periods of relative lucidity to create strange yet wonderful music in the 1970s and 80s. In so doing he gathered enough admirers for this splendid 1990 tribute album, released to raise royalties to help him in his latest struggle with authority and the mental health system.
The diverse artists still make a remarkably coherent album, showing what a potent and sensitive songwriter Erickson is. ZZ Top's infectious uptempo shuffle on 'Reverberation' doesn't sound out of place next to Primal Scream's trippy `Slip Inside This House', while Southern Pacific's 'Cold Night For Alligators' is reminiscent of Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Other highlights are Bongwater's aching `You Don't Love Me Yet' and the intense, slowed-down version of `Two-Headed Dog' by Sister Double Happiness. REM are a little disappointing, but `Zombie' was never one of Erickson's strongest songs.
Tribute albums are generally patchy affairs, but Erickson's fans will surely approve - and enjoy. It is a well-made and sincere introduction to the man's music, but it also stands up on its own account as genuinely good album. Highly Recommended.
