I've admired Mitch's work for years and seen him several times live (including recording Radio 4's The Now Show) but this is a real gem. Putting aside the comic genius of his lyrics there are some truly great (and sometimes beautiful) songs and having listened to this CD over the last few weeks many of them are swimming around my head - "earworms", I think they're called. I'd single-out:
Naughty; Motorway Food; Go Green; Auto Erotic Asyphxiation; What Would Elvis Do; Try Not To Die; Only In California; Where Next ...and the superb Not Bitter (Yes, I know that's most of the CD, but the quality is that high and consistent!)
I was a little troubled by Where Next - which maybe hints at something of a mid-life crisis - and subsequently discovered from his website that Mitch is branching-out into acting (in which venture I wish him every luck); I'm sure this won't be his last CD, but if - unhappily - it proved to be he would indeed be finishing on a high note.
As with all mitch benn's work, it's clever, witty and very very funny. left me laughing for hours afterwards, and thats not the schizophrenia! a-hem, but do buy it, it's really verry good, and see him live if you can!
