Product Description

What do you do when you think your ex-lover has murdered his wife?  That's the question Ursula Gretton, an archeologist working on the Saxon burial ground on Bamford Hill, puts to Meredith Mitchell in the hope that Meredith's friendship with Cotswold Chief Inspector Markby might cast some light on her dilemma.  But Markby is dismissive of Ursula's suspicions concerning the disappearance of Dan Woollard's wife - until a body is found in the rubbish dump near the site Woollard and Ursula have been excavating.

Woollard's team of archeologists aren't the only ones to disturb the peace of the windswept hill.  Much to the fury of a taciturn pair of local landowners, a band of New Age travellers has set up camp on the hill, only to disappear the day the body's discovered.  Markby is faced with a tangle of conflicting clues, suspects and possible witnesses - amongst the latter Meredith Mitchell - and when a second body is found it is clear the web is growing evern more complex, and destructive.

No bones to pick! 27 May 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Mitchell and Markby become entangled in the mystery of a body found in a tip, close to an archaeological Dig. Could it be the wife of one of the men heading the Dig, the man who has been having an affair with a friend of Meredith? If so, there are quite a few people who have a motive for killing her.
As always, Ann Granger peppers her stories with plenty of characters, twists and turns and motives, keeping the reader guessing as to who the actual killer could be. A good read!

This is a well woven story of a murder and the tangled web the main characters Meredith Mitchell and Chief Inspector Alan Markby must untangle to find the killer ... or killers.
The story opens with a young Ursula Gretin, an archeologist on a dig with a former married lover, Dan Woollard. Ursula broke off the affair with Dan who refuses to give up on her. He's married to a romance novelist Natalie Woollard. During the opening of the story, Dan calls Ursula to come to his home to see him on an urgent matter. Urgent to him that is. Once there, Ursula realizes that his main motive is to try to rekindle their relationship. She flatly refuses, insisting that their relationship is over. While there Dan tells her that his wife has gone off to visit her mother ... yet, Ursula spots her pocketbook, complete with wallet and car keys and begins to suspect the worst. What woman in their right mind would leave home without her purse, wallet or keys. Ursula suspects the obvious, that Dan has done away with his wife so he can spend his life with her .... or did he? Ursula confides to her friend Meredith her suspicions that Dan has done something to his wife, who then confides to her friend and police detective Alan. Together the two sleuths unravel a few mysteries -- not only the present one of Natalie Woollard's disappearance, but also a murder that is some 25 years old.

This is a well written, well told, spellbinding tail of love, betrayal, murder, guilt and innocence. Find this book and find out the conclusions. You'll hang on each and ever page until you come to the amazing conclusion. This is a great read!

I really enjoyed this book - a light, easy read and a worthy addition to the series. Ann Granger is a much underrated author of these 'cosy' type whodunnits and I like the ongoing 'will they, won't they' relationship between Mitchell & Markby.
I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Agatha Christie, M C Beaton, Betsy Rowlands, etc.
