Jim White continues to turn out recordings of great singularity and rare quality. This is no exception.
I love the way he colours the music, unafraid to mix genres, sounds, textures and tones to create songs that have no parallels anywhere else. Three songs here, grouped toward the end of the CD, form a kind of tonal trilogy, deeply reflective and moving. These are My Brother's Keeper, That Wintered Blue Sky and Epilogue to a Marriage. They're great songs individually and grouped together their effect is breathtaking.
I have no interest in which of Jim's recordings may be thought his "best" as every one of them (and I have them all) is a keeper. When it's this good, such distinctions are superfluous.
My only request (should you ever read this, Jim!) is that he'll leave behind him the lyrical obsession with Jesus. Granted, so far I've heard the name only once in this CD, but I dream of the day when Jim will make a recording that has no need to revisit this theme.
Meanwhile, for those who don't know Jim White this is as good a place to start as any. You WILL buy another one once you've heard him and it really doesn't matter which, as they're all fully worthy of your time. You'll be rewarded in ways you can't imagine yet.
