All Novalee Nation wants is to live in a house without wheels underneath it, so when Willy Jack Pickens announces he's off to California to live the good life - by way of compensation for a severed finger - Novalee decides to go with him. But she's seven months pregnant and seven is her unlucky number. Willy Jack dumps her out at a Wall Mart store on the way to almost-fame as a country and western singer and the loss of a great deal more than a finger, but it is Novalee who earns real fame.
This is seriously funny, and it packs a punch. Unfortunately it is also gratuitously sentimental. It is well-worth reading for the laughter - and even some of the tears. Good people abound, but so do bad. Letts goes for the extremes in both cases and hits the mark more often than she misses. This was an Oprah Whinfrey Book Club choice; make of that what you will.
