Ideal Christmas gift book by one of Radio 4's Saturday Live poets. A collection of Matt's latest poems, horticultural, whimsical, ecological, political and just plain funny. Where Earwigs Dare contains a rich biodiversity of verse, some recycled from Matt's appearances on Radio 4's Saturday Live and his stint writing Desktop Poetry for The Guardian, others that bubbled doggedly up of their own accord - from a grim sense of joie de vivre. There's enough stuff about potatoes and leeks, about clouds, sheds and slugs, to qualify as a Green Book - and enough about kippers and cows, pain relief, petty theft and public nudity, to qualify as a typical Harvey offering. There is also an introduction to Empath Man - contemporary superhero who fights crime through his advanced listening skills and ability to stay open and vulnerable in a tight situation...The poet himself is locally sourced. The book may contain produce from more than one chakra.

Nice to see Matt's fine ant and bee lines and mindings of the gap. He is a wonderer at the world and its words, although possibly a little anti-slug. --John Hegley
Matt Harvey's poetry puts a smile on your face and leaves a little wisdom in your brain - a winning combination. --Fi Glover
About the Author
Poet, enemy of all that's difficult and upsetting, Matt Harvey performs up and down the country at festivals, cabarets, conferences and colleges. He is founder of Wondermentalist, the comedy-infused, musically-enhanced slightly interactive poetry cabaret with resident superhero. His consuming interest in the core concerns of contemporary society has led him into many interesting shops. The Illustrator: David Hughes is author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Walker Books), David Hughes Drawings (Kerber Verlag) and Walking the Dog (Jonathan Cape).
I've seen the live performances of these poems many, many times, and the book is a must-have. Whimsical, crazy and sometimes just plain beautiful, it gives your creative brain a nice slice of cake to chew on. And if you don't know Matt's poetry yet - what are you waiting for? This book is my constant bedtime companion - just don't tell my other-half that I'm cheating on him with a poetry book!
Heard a couple of poems recited in a theatre and laughed so much that I had to get the book. Not all the poems are as funny but it's definitely a quirky book. Boought another of his books as well. And I am not a great poetry lover.... this is a bit different!
This slim volume of Matt Harvey's whimsical poetry - along with a small amount of prose and some cartoons - more than makes up in quality for the absence of quantity (less than 100 pages, with generous white space throughout).
Gems include the fabulous Empath Man who, "fights crime with his advanced listening skills and ability to stay open and vulnerable in a tight situation", and the Charge of the Late Brigade, which starts:
Half an hour, half an hour Half an hour wrongward Flustered and out of breath Drive the unnumbered Forward the Late Brigade Leaving their beds unmade Fretful and out of breath Drive the unslumbered
